Good job.

Lower pressure drop across the intercooler means to get the same manifold pressure the Dawes is adjusted because you are tapping at the compressor outlet.

Reducing the pressure drop for a give MAP results in a lower pressure ratio and greater turbo efficiency even if it doesn't cool any better. Hopefully it will do this too and you are onto a good one.

Hi Gav Nice JOB!! How did manage to fit it ? Any Pics ? Any pointers ?

:D :D :D :D

Katana 17 June 2002 09:21 PM

Originally, was your intercooler the angled one as opposed to the straight one? I'm curious as I'm thinking of doing the same with mine...

jonny gav 17 June 2002 09:42 PM

yeah it was the angled one but i must say its not an easy job,for starters you can not retain the dump valve that is on the side of the intercooler as there isn`t enough room for it.(made a blanking plate for this)
you also need some extra piping from the turbo to the ally pipe on the under side of the intercooler.(an elbow at 51mm and a straight piece at the same size, got them from hosedirect in doncaster)
you also need a dump valve fitting kit to refit your dump valve(got mine at local motorshop)
you also need the underpan from a post 97(newer shape)model to complete the job.

i must warn you though,DO NOT undertake this job if you are not willing to lose some skin from your fingers :D :D :D

Katana 17 June 2002 09:48 PM

Hmm, looks like a good summers project for me. Cheers for the info Jonny..

Have noticed any changes with the intercooler...??

Dan

jonny gav 18 June 2002 07:44 PM

yeah, there is a more urgent feel to the car,and it has much better throttle response than before, definately worth doing ;)

Was it hard fitting the under tray for the scoop or did it fit straight on...??? Posted some better pics of my car under the thread about my 19's...

Have you had it lowered yet...??

DeanF 18 June 2002 09:26 PM

Well done Jonny, Doesn't it feel good when somebody says it won't fit & you excel & prove them wrong, Well worth losing a bit of Knuckle skin.
Keep it up.

Dean

jonny gav 18 June 2002 09:33 PM

dean-it feels fantastic mate ;)
dan-not yet mate,been putting all my time into this bl00dy intercooler :D :D :D

got a new steering wheel, gear knob and pedals(all momo)
scoobysport downpipe (it blowes flames out now ;) )

thinking about fitting poly bushes and some good springs as the dampers are firm enough ;) and that should be the handling sorted.

also looking at some good brakes too but that will be my winter project as it will be off the road from november.

harvey 20 June 2002 08:44 PM

Hi Jonny,
Glad it all went well even if it was a bit bigger job than you thought.
Did you use the standard B.O.V. I gave you or your original?
I assume the alloy Y-piece matched up exactly?

jonny gav 22 June 2002 04:38 PM

hi harvey,it was abugger but i got there in the end mate ;)

had to use my original one.(no room)

HKSubaru 10 October 2002 10:07 AM

is there any difference in the STI5 to STI6 one? ave you got any close ups of it? from each angle?

harvey 10 October 2002 03:40 PM

The V and V1 look the same.

carlos_hiraoka 15 April 2003 06:42 PM

jonny did u have to shorten the throttle body , I have a friend who was trying to do the same but the space was very tight between the TB and the enginewall .....

Carlos H.

jonny gav 15 April 2003 06:50 PM

Hi Carlos,
the under bonnet tray is the easiest bit to fit, the 2 holes at the front of the tray line up with the 2 bolts on the front of the scoop.

there is just enough room between the throttle body and the bulk head to fit the intercooler but if you want to make the job a little easier remove the lip from the front of the intercooler.

hope this helps

jonny

ps tried to send you e-mail but it got returned

carlos_hiraoka 15 April 2003 07:04 PM

Im glad to read that youve managed to get this to work, as i had the same thing said about it not fitting.MY95 Wrx Ra could do with this mod as ive already got a spare sti intercooler which i started to modifiy to fit. Ive blanked off the alloy dump valve pipe that comes from the front & cut a spare throttle body short but still have a clearance problem with the rear bulkhead. Some pics would be great and some more info on the under tray thingy.

martin850 22 April 2003 06:12 PM

Looking at starting this soon, but what has happened to the pics? Could you possibly e-mail them to me?

Rich Tee 06 June 2003 10:38 PM

done this aslo, just be brutal with the plate over the engine mount on the rear bulkhead, if you are using the i/c with the ally y pipe then it will foul on a couple of corners, just needs a big hammer :D
