Hawkeye WRX Gear Linkage Problem

Hi All,

Something in the gear linkage on my Hawkeye WRX appears to have **** the bed. The gear lever ball joint and socket can freely be pulled up out of its seating. I can change gears fine but have to press down to stop the gear lever riding up out the hole, I need to sort this asap as the car is my daily driver and it's off the road till its fixed.

Here is a view from the underside:

Any ideas what has gone wrong and what needs to be fixed. Part numbers etc? Is there some retaining clip on the underside that has popped off? I do recall the sound of something metal clanging the day before the gear lever decided it wanted to jump out of its hole.

Help and advice greatly appreciated, cheers.

There may also be a snap ring on top of the bushing but not sure for this model year and as such is not shown on the above diag but just in case

also just in case part code 30351 Stay complete - Gear shift part number 35031AC050

RE: snaprings
Earlier 5MT levers had the bushing fitted from the top with an inner snapring to hold it in.
The MY06 and later fit the bush from the bottom and have an outer snapring holding it in.
From that i assume the bush rests against a shoulder at the top it's housing on the stay and somehow you have crushed the top of the bush and pulled it out of the top past the shoulder.

Yes, it's a Go Fast Bits short shifter, had it fitted by Darren Moore about a year ago. I just got done with some searching and came up with the same snap ring. It must have popped off. I found a thread on the NASIOC where someone else has had the tissue of the gear lever popping out: https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho....php?t=2530547

Thanks for the info, I'll be getting booked in the garage to get out sorted as soon as.

I don't think anything had been crushed, as based off this diagram the plastic bushing that holds the shifter ball joint is inserted from the top and secured from the bottom using the snap ring? The shoulder around the opening in the picture of my shifter is just a rubber seal covering the whole opening to underneath the car.

This is all fixed now, problem was just the snap ring had popped off. There wasn't any damage to other components so was quite straight forward.

Well the plastic bushing that holds the gear stick ball joint has now broken up, it much have been too damaged from the previous incident after getting the snap ring replaced. I'm going to change back to the stock shifter and I'm trying to figure out the part number for the plastic bushing, i think it's 35035AC020. The car is a 2006 WRX Hawkeye. I'm assuming i can pair this with the snap ring part mentioned earlier in the thread 031432000?

Not had it replaced yet, only got all the parts sorted for a full replacement of the various bits and bobs in that area right before covid arrived. When it was in the garage to get the C shape clip reinstalled on the bottom (which needs to be removed to get the plastic bushing out), it took a fair bit of time to sort it. As per the workshop manual the gear selector unit as a whole needs to be dropped down and out for best access.

I have various o rings, bushings, twist wire and the whole rubber seal to replace so it will have to come out when that happens.
