Compression check with cambelt removed?
 

Hi all. I recently took the cam belt and cam pulleys (non turbo side) off to change the union bolt for the AVCS valve on my 2006 Haw - because of a problem I've been with sluggish AVCS control on that side. Incidentally I thought there was (likely) a blocked micro filter in the union bolt, but actually there isn't any filter at all, so it was totaly waste of time. Now also I think something bad might have happened when I undid the cam pulley bolts, bad as in valve damaging bad....

So ,my question. With the cam belt off, and the spark plugs out of all cylinders, and all cams / valves at rest, is it possible to use the starter to carry out a compression test?

I'm guessing yes, but with the way I've been recently (with 'Doh' moments) I just want to check first!

No you'll have no induction air to compress. Leak down test possibly but not the best scenario. Plus some of the valves will be open a bit.

Cheers Joe. I think my faux pas was with everything still fitted I held the crank with a breaker bar and used another one to loosen the exhaust cam sprocket. I didn't think it had at the time, but now I'm wondering if caused it to skip a few teeth, because when I turned the engine to align the crank marks it made a catching sound and then a horric metalic springing back noise from that side. Strange though as it does not do it now the belt is off and you turn each cam. So think I've damaged a valve. I've used an endoscope and can't see anything obvious, what it's worth.

It was a proper head in hands moment!

So you reckon best to rebuild and try running?

Fire it back together if it only slipped a couple of teeth you should be ok as long as you didn't turn it over with the starter. It'll only take half an hour. Start it with the bare minimum just to see is it ok.

nope, the battery was disconnected, so no starter! Will see how it goes, just waiting for all the replacement parts to arrive. The mishimoto rad was leaking too, from the magnetic collector because it is a stupid design using rubber seal and PTFE tape.... so I took all that out too.

Do away with all them silly taps and plastic bungs change them for a hydraulic fitting and a Dowty washer.

Managed to get it back on the road tonight, all good and fixed the original AVCS problem too (it was the solenoid after all that hassle!) :thumb:

Haha, yeah almost! Been really busy with work and the little'n, but insisted to have a good push this evening and 'get it done'. I was over the moon when it fired up straight away and sounded sweet.
