WR1 or other that is the ?

Having owned 9 scoobies in the past at 48 years old i thought i would have grown out of them by now but my sons just bought a 2006 sti type uk widetrack and ive got the bug again . I have always wanted a wr1 but the question is do i buy one of these or are there any other scoobies that are more desirable , for instance i dont know anything about the newer sti only they are the 2.5 engine and were quite bad reliability wise in the older models are these newer ones any better any help would be appreciated cheers .

WR1s are for people who know very little about Imprezas and like the colour - way overpriced for what they are.

2.5's are excellent once forged by a reputable engine builder

have to agree but plenty of forged ones out there to chose from now and there is no replacement for displacement lol ,,, once you have owned a properly built 2.5 there is no going back to the 2ltr then lol

RobsyUK 17 February 2019 07:34 AM

At japspeed I saw the wr1 club with all the cars lined up. The variations in colour was shocking

Russell38 17 February 2019 12:31 PM

If you have the money go jdm definitely

T5NYW 17 February 2019 04:49 PM

if you like colour IIRC other option is the euro special edition was Petta Solberg. but WR1 overpriced IMHO

As said by many above better VFM to get the widetrack version uk or if can afford it a JDM

I've got 2.5 uk hawkeye mapped by andy forest it's been running 360bhp for years no problems . If I was in the market to buy one today I'd be looking at a jdm maybe a spec c hatch .

I've got a MY2016 STI and I actually think it's awesome. The car hooks up and goes incredibly well considering.

The interior is a massive improvement over most of the subarus I saw when I was younger and I've had some utterly brilliant drives in it.

I'm on 55,000 miles and the engine seems to be running nicely.

wrx2005 17 February 2019 06:57 PM

There is a massive thread on here about the 2.5 engine it's even been pinned.
it has not changed since 2005 and they all suffer hg and ringland failure.
the odd one may survive but the majority pop.
as said above once rebuilt correctly it's great but if your idea of fun is buying a car then spending 4k to rebuild the engine then buy a 2.5.
other wise jdm is the sensible choice

2.5 dearer tax too.
WR1 colour is like marmite you love it or hate it. I actually love it and promised myself one when they first came out in 2004.
the wr1 colour is so individual and that's why I like it.
on my 3rd WR1 now . :-)

I'm guessing you're looking for a weekend toy? As one midlife to another i would suggest a Ltd jdm car, spec c maybe? Probably similar pricing to A WR1? A WR1 is probably the best choice of UK cars as they tend to be well cared for, probably because of their limited edition status. I'm not up to date with the modern stuff but personally I would avoid the 2.5 unless it had been rebuilt by a reputable builder.
Either way it you're planning to use it as a daily, a ten year old plus car is going to be a battle to keep it rust free.I
Maybe sign up on type-ra.com and get an angle on all the jdm Subaru models.
