Last night on my way home approx 7pm
I came up behind one of these and the next thing I know he`s off.
So in the interests of Subaru I gave chase.
He could not escape me but due to road traffic I could not get past either, however I don`t think I could have got past easily, even if I had a chance.
havind said the above we were driving on mainly straight A roads with no major twisty bits.
I`m not sure of the exact model, does anyone have any info or is my new MY02 (1500 miles) just not run in properly yet

He only has FWD and probably puts down as much if not more power at the wheels as you when you take scoobs AWD drivetrain losses into account.
On a straight road once you are both rolling the difference in pretty small.
Your car will loosen up some, but there are alot of cars which can out drag a WRX from a rolling start in a straight line - don't get too cocky!

Hi Chuck

not getting cocky (thats funny coming from a "chuck" )

I was just surprised that a Skoda could be that quick

SWRTWannabe 17 June 2002 02:01 PM

143mph is the top speed for a standard RS

Tsk tsk - they're not the wheelbarrows they were in the eighties now you know ;)

ianc 17 June 2002 02:04 PM

Depends what it was, and if it was standard ;)

RS - FWD - 180BHP standard - 230BHP with a few mods.

4x4 - 4WD (obviously) - 150BHP standard - 210BHP with a few mods, maybe more.

1.8T - FWD - 150BHP standard - 210BHP with a few mods, maybe more.

Not really a match for Impreza's, but don't underestimate.

Skoda thread needs your attention.............

sure he'll be along soon.............cos he wont be doing any work ;)

logiclee 17 June 2002 03:00 PM

I think Mr Tavia with his modded RS Octavia had it GPS tracked at over 160mph. Has now reduced the mods a little so I dont know what he'd get now.

On A roads above 40mph there would be very little between a standard RS Octavia and a UK WRX. If the Skoda had the 230 bhp mods I would expect it to pull away from the scoob as only 2WD, lighter, more aerodynamic and more power than the WRX. The Octavia also has full boost and maximum torque available from below 2000 rpm to above 5000rpm so there is little danger being in the dead zone on exit of bends and when changing up a bit early.

The RS is also well known for being the best handling car in the VAG stable, would only loose out in tight twisties, off the mark and obviosly in the wet.

Nearly bought one myself, unbelievable value for money.

from memory jons is pushing out very close to a PPP'd Old Shape Scoob.

i know he upset and suprised a good few people at The Ring a few weeks ago with just how quick his car is......and how well it handles.

I've driven the Scooby, my Girlie owns a RSTurbo Octavia and for me, I've got an Integra......
So where to start?? Octavia compared to Scooby! Well the Skoda starts out pretty well at 7K cheaper and being fully loaded http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/thumbs.gif But what's that got to do with driving?
The Skoda has some real pace, better than my old 306GTi-6 with some very tidy handling, even in the wet it still remains very composed with great adjustability. The brakes are awesome, but I'd like a bit more engine noise myself http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/spineyes.gif

Point to point I'd say there wasn't much in it between the standard Scoob and the RS. Odviously the Scoob has the ultimate grip but the chassis on the RS is superb and can really be hustled, I'm not to sure on how the standard WRX stands up to being hustled??

It's all down to driver skill at the end of the day, I had a good drive cross country with a ZM Roadster with the RS the other day. Now although I'll be the first to say I'm not the best driver in the world the Z could only pull away from me on the straights, but then again so he should http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/spineyes.gif . But come to the bends and I was right there, how annoyed to you think he was getting husstled by a SKODA http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/angel.gif

All I can say really is that there both great cars but the Skoda is much more discret, except when there's 10 of them!!!!!

matt

ianc 17 June 2002 04:48 PM

Yeah, they are just too damn common, I mean, you go out for a drive and see so many, then they follow you, even when you try to shake em by driving round a roundabout a few times, they just sit on your bootlid!

;)

matt555teg-r 17 June 2002 04:55 PM

Oh, forgot to mention that the RS can be chipped for a few hundred quid and be good for 220bhp+ and 235lbft and have a modest 1 Bar boost pressure, good value for money I'd say http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/bandit.gif

Beware Skoda badged Ambulances though http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/karate.gif They tend to enjoy a lot of roundabout action http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/sarboy.gif

matt

ianc 17 June 2002 04:58 PM

hehe, if you were closer....... ;)

So, you getting it chipped next month then? Hopefully I should be doing the same.

IC

matt555teg-r 17 June 2002 05:17 PM

Hopefully yes!!! Good value for money really when you consider I'm pricing up a new exhaust for my Integra and it's going to cost around £500 for a Supersprint or DC Sports backbox and centre section!!!!! Crazy money, maybe I'll be leaving that and go buy the WRC and get it larged up!!!!! ;0))

matt

mannyo1 17 June 2002 08:11 PM

As Ian said, they are more discreet than the Scoob except when there are this many, oh and a 4x4 estate for good measure.
http://www.octaviars.com/DSC00244.JPG
there are more but the camera lens was not wide enough.

Mark Jackson 17 June 2002 08:56 PM

Hmm, seems like a well baited TaviaRS trap to me.

TaviaRS 18 June 2002 08:59 AM

Damn, how did I miss this? Must have been working! ;)

I would say that there is very little difference between mine and a WRX. An STI will pull away from me, but not by much. The only time I have problems is off the line, for 2 reasons. Firstly, I have 2wd and therefore lack the traction. Secondly, I have ridiculously high gear ratios. I mean, 1st runs to nearly 45, 2nd to 72, 3rd 110. Once moving however, its not too bad. Above 110 (on a track) I am at least as quick as a Scoob (barring modded ones) due to 2wd and better aerodynamics. In the wet it depends what tyres I've got on and driver bravery/stupidity as to whether I can keep up.

A word of warning about racing Skodas:- I know of at least 6 unmarked police ones! They are very, very hard to spot. Oh and watch out for 1.4 and 1.6 ones :D

ianc 18 June 2002 09:02 AM

tch tch, you're slacking Jon, don't you know that promoting Skoda's on Scoobynet *is* your job?

TaviaRS <--it's all his fault!

:D

[Edited by ianc - 6/18/2002 9:03:24 AM]

Steve Perriam 18 June 2002 01:34 PM

oh rite, so he's got a job on Scoobynet ?

must be why he never does any 'work' here at work then ;) ;)

ianc 18 June 2002 01:44 PM

Officially, no, he (allegedly ;) ) works in IT...

However, the process seen time and time again is that someone just asks Jon a few questions about it, or takes a look at it, then buys one.

It's spooky, I think he has some sort of black magic going on, I only met up with him to take a look, and before I knew it I owned one too.

Be careful out there....

:D

SWRTWannabe 18 June 2002 02:28 PM

I can vouch for that - I'm picking mine up on Monday, after asking for opinions on it here ;)

ianc 18 June 2002 02:54 PM

Excellent, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

We'll see you here then?.........

SWRTWannabe 18 June 2002 03:21 PM

Quite probably!

SWRTWannabe 18 June 2002 03:32 PM

In fact, now joined. Not got anything sensible to post yet though!

mike16v 18 June 2002 03:45 PM

I'm getting tempted by an RS - would love a Scoob or an Evo, but I don't think I could afford the running costs. I'm going to look into getting a test drive after the summer... these things sound like the performance bargain of the decade! I've not heard a bad word about the performance and I'v eheard nothing but praise about the handling.

Any sites where I can get a look at some good pictures of them?

ianc 18 June 2002 03:50 PM

I think several of us originally were going to go for impreza's \ evo's but decided the running costs and attention (boy racers \ police \ thieving scumbags) were too much so ended up with an Octavia.

Plenty of piccies here - http://www.octaviars.com/rs.htm be sure to check out the meets\silverstone piccies.
