Gc8 restoration and £build£

Hi guys thought i would share this one with you all i bought this gem last week on the hope to fully restore her from the ground up down to every last bolt on the car. Plan is to strip it down get everything zink plated and then fully seal the car then grt it into paint this car wont see a track it will be a fast road car it may see a strip now and then my wife ran low 11s last year so hopefully we can get it in the low 10s or under. Aiming for about 650bhp and 600ftlb any suggestions or advice welcome thanks bal

Hi and welcome!

650hp in a classic is serious power!! I hope you have a realistic budget as Iv seen people come into the game before and once started build ups etc, their arse soon fell out with prices!!

What spec engine and turbo do you have in mind ?

These cars are old now and if not been modded already chances are a lot would need changing to be able to handle that sort of power, and it cant be done cheap if want it to be reliable, you have to think ahead things such as ecu/mapper etc also a suitable spec gearbox I still cant believe people think by chucking in a ****ty uk 6 speed with 100k on the clock for £900 will run right time and time again NO chance, Subarus are made to be launched and that damages things all that to be considered and much more.

Take your time. Spec it like a Boss1 and enjoy it!!

Im allready half way there mate i have another subaru classic running 500 and 520ftlb i plan on taking my engine from that one and the running gear. Although the engine spec will be changing ill just be keeping the block

Fully built avcs heads with cams
Rotated standard position turbo
Rotated process west intake
Airtec rs500 intercooler
Tubular subframes
Frp doors
Full modification of the loom
Alot of other stuff also

If you've got a 500 hp classic then you will know there is no need for 650 hp and if thats your goal 20k MIGHT cover it.

Sounds good, may I ask why your starting from scratch if you already got a good classic, Why not mod further lol
Iv never heard of a rotated standard position turbo or it wont be rotated lol

Yes mate unfortunately my gc8 has the dreaded turrets and ive had the wide arch fitted so wont be cost affective.
And yes you can buy a rotated kit of the shelf for a standard position turbo i get usually they are for big turbos to allow them to fit

So today I spent some more time on the project managed to mock a jig together at work and today I managed to get it up in the air and got the underside pretty much stripped of parts.

next to do is to completely strip the under seal back to bare metal then acid etch prime it and new under seal over the top then paint the underside.

Old so it's been a while things have been slow what with other circumstances but now it's time to throw myself at the project again. Bought the manifold as it was a steal of a price

Would you regret not doing it once it's built?

Jonny Cut Corners 02 March 2020 09:31 AM

The body looks to be in great condition already to be fair.
Mine is half stripped down atm, for a new engine and 6 speed swap... really making me consider getting it blasted so I can sort the rust properly!
