1995 STi Type RA tune
Looking for the best "bang for your buck" ways of tuning a 95 STi RA. Already has some mods from a prev owner (ie 22psi, dog box tranny, full roll cage, endless pads and rotors, skid plates, tein flex z with active pro) I believe mostly stock internals. I estimate right now about 310-315 at the wheels and 370 at the crank. Not sure if an ECU tune has ever been done. Any thoughts or tips would be helpful.

Well firstly if it’s stock internals @ 370 it’ll not last long, lol. |
Well, whoever had it before me took good care of it and mechanically it's very sound for a 20+ y.o. car. Though at some point I will get it overhauled. Looking to get a port and polish done though first to get a look at the internals a little better. I'm at about 146,000km right now.

Yes just get a good health check done, fueling etc. Are you still on the 5 speed OE box too?? Post some pics up of the old girl ;) |
No, prev owner put a dog box in it. still have the OEM tranny and gearset though.

*note this is a JDM spec STI RA I am referring to, not sure if the Euro / Aus Spec cars are different. Any of yuinz know?

on the std turbo for that age of car (TD05-16G) and without supporting mods like larger injectors, fuel pump, higher target MAP sensor, etc. then they struggle to do early 300's and approx 340-350 once all completed
what other mods (if any) doe it have?? |
as above unless it's hard the turbo switched out it's unlikely to be much over 330hp at the crank, the cars lack of weight usually makes them fairly rapid to drive tho at that level.
Pop the ECU cover off and see if its been fitted with a chip/daughter board already, if not then handiest way to go is usually an ESL board fitted and mapped to suit. |

MY95 - 96 STI
Standard Injectors are 380cc Grey, Will struggle to get over 300ish - Common 1st stage mod is 440cc Yellow, good for 330 ish with upgraded fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator. Standard Slanted TMIC Good for 300ish (maybe). Standard Catted downpipe might allow 300ish. Standard 95/96 Cylinder heads with hydraulic cam lifters not good for high revs and factory cams are "mild" and they will have trouble keeping up at high revs. Standard Cast pistons and the stud and nut conrods are not the best design for big power - On borrowed time at 300ish. Standard TD05 is a very capable turbo and good for 330bhp with supporting modifications. All these parts are now 140k miles 24 years old so I would leave alone if original. I own a 96 sti type ra currently making 390 but theres very little left of the standard engine, in its previous state of tune it made 330 at the crank with all of the above either modified or uprated parts. ESL daughter boards are the most cost-efficient ECU upgrade for these early cars. If someone went to the trouble and expense of fitting a dog box, I would have thought they would have rebuilt the engine to a higher than factory spec. Maybe get some pics of the engine bay and we might be able to comment further? Im not normally a fan of cars with Decals but I like the grey on white :thumb: |
