Forester 2008 Pump locked on even with ignition off after ignition light

Hi All

My engine light came on permanently along with flashing cruise light on my 2008 normally aspirated 2l Forester.
I limped it home (it drove OK) and opened the bonnet when I got home. There is a high pitched noise coming from the engine bay, like a permanently switched on pump and a nasty smell of something being run dry. The device whatever it is only turns off when the battery is disconnected.
As far as I can see all the fluids are OK.
I've attached a photo showing where the noise appears to be coming from.
Any thoughts on what is causing the problem? and secondly do people think it safe to drive it to a garage given that whatever it is causing the noise is permanently on.
I hope to get a code reader in the next couple of days which might clarify the issue.

Thanks in advance

Martin

Secondary air pump relay is stuck on causing the pump to run all the time, there is a recall for this on some models so worth ringing a dealer and finding out if your is affected.
Dont want to scare you but there are some horror stories of them catching fire hence the recall.
My old Hawk one stuck on and melted the pump beyond repair.

Hi Smithys

Thanks for that - that sounds about right. I'm glad I lifted the hood and disconnected the battery.
Shame really, other than this it has been pretty reliable.
