NO Ignition
 

Hi All,

I'll try and keep a long story short...

I was fitting my ABW arches...
I didnt realise I had drilled into my wiring loom in my drivers side arch...
I started the car it started fine and I turned it around and done the other side (passenger)...
When I had done the other side I tried to start the car and the engine was turning over but not firing up...
I then realised I had damaged the loom and got a proffesional electrician to re-solder the broken wires back together...
The engine is turning over well but will still not start...
I cannot see any blown fueses and I am now very worried that I have damaged something much more costly by a very retarded misrake.

-Fuel pump is definitely pumping
-No errors etc (But I am running a Link G3 ecu so I dont know if the CEL would show??)


Really appreciate any ideas anybody has?

If you still have your original ecu if possible plug it back in and see have you any codes. (That's only if mods allow) Have you ignition lights if not check the fusible link in the engine bay. There's a couple of large square fuses that are part of the ignition system.

I dont have an original ECU unfortunately :(
Dash cluster lights illumate ok, fuses all seem ok...

Are you sure you've all the lights, oil pressure, battery, engine management etc.

Hmmm I thought so, but once home I will check again. If these lights are not all on, what would that point to?

The square fuses under the bonnet. Some of them you have to check with a meter cause you cant see them.

Checked this morning and the lights are on the dash I.E Oil light, battery light etc :brickwall

As it started and worked fine after the drivers side work was done, could there be something on the passenger side damaged at all then ?

I did check and couldnt see anything... but like you say,logically it seems worth another look.

Checked every fuse under bonnet and inside the car and all have continuity... I am now getting very worried I have damaged the ECU.

Check for spark for starters. Not familiar with link but some ecus have an internal fuse.

I assume I just pull the spark plug and rest it on top of the engine and try and turn it over?

Correct but if you've another plug you can cheat :thumb:

It sounds more like its wet the plugs turning the car round, if it had fried the ecu it would not run the first time.

That was going to be one of my next questions... For lack of a better phrase could the engine have flooded as had turned it over a lot with the broken wires and potentially no spark etc.

Right, I have just checked and there is definitely a spark there... And it smells and sounds like there is fuel...

you definately have the check engine light illiminated before cranking her over ?

I dont have the check engine light (But I don't think I usually do due to the aftermarket ECU)

Lights on = Battery, Oil, Brake, Abs, airbag

Hmm, cant comment on if the Link ecu deletes the illumination of the check engine light but when i had a faulty ecu and car wouldnt start the check engine light didnt light up.

It mentions ecu errors may be displayed on the dash still

might be worth asking them or seeing if you can connect to your ecu

Did you manage to connect via your laptop ?

Just did it thisd lunchtime... connected no problems. Could read everything, change settings and save etc...

Tried starting, still no luck...

I had the same thing with my ESL tho, i used a 2nd hand ECU which had the socket already soldered on as i didnt want to mess with my Z4 ( at 1st) , It worked at 1st, for some days, Then 1 day car wouldnt start, i could connect to the ESL board but the check engine light didnt illuminate on the dash

moved ESL board to my Z4 ( after alterations) and boom, off she went and working fine since ( some years lol )

You need clarification your check engine light should or shouldnt light up with your ecu and go from there

I just can't work it out... There is a spark there, there is fuel there... Only other thing is air?

No way the timing could have got f****d is there?

Possibly not hard to check an hour would do it. As you've said spark and fuel it should go have you pulled the plugs and cleaned/replaced them.

I havent... purely because I remember it being a bit of a PITA the last time I did it a few years back. If you think its worth a go though?
How would you go about checking timing?

Well you have to start somewhere plugs is awkward but easy enough. Timing is much the same pull the covers and check the timing marks on the rear covers and pulleys. Plugs would be the easiest to give you an idea. You could always do the easiest plugs first then it might come back to life. If it does start keep it going till it clears itself.
