What engine to fit classic?
Hello all
I am contemplating recommissioning my old wrx ( now my brothers). Its a 1995 wrx and Its been laid up for about 10 years now. When I was using it I had a bit of trouble with engines and bigends. Do any of the later models have a more reliable engine that holds together a bit longer? I would like to get a engine from a breaker if poss. Any recommendations on what year is best and can be made to fit? |
Ideally you would need a bottom end from a version 7/8 sti and bolt your heads to it. One of the strongest engines Subaru made and good for well over 400bhp.

We won't be looking at tuning, certainly not beyond 300 hp. Are the later wrx engines any better than the old ones?

The version 7/8 are from 2002-2005 bugeye and blobeye. The heads on these have avcs which will require an aftermarket ecu to get them to work. You could use them but the avcs wouldn't work (the system would just stay dormant) I did this a few years ago.
You can pick a long engine up from mattyB@mbdevelopments in the breakers section. Prices vary from 1250-1500 quid. Factor in a fresh timing belt kit, rocker seals, front and rear seal and a new water pump plus oil and filter. |
You can only use the short engine all your ancillaries and manifold won't fit. Too much hassle and cost to change.

OK thanks

As above, EJ207 short block will fit the bill :thumb:
