would a set of gt spec headers really alter the sound of the car? its the only thing thats different.

Massively so in my experience. Each to their own but I found the GT spec headers too tinny/raspy and you lose some of the burble. They are louder for sure though. No doubting the performance benefits of them in big power applications but I couldn't wait to get rid of mine!

I'm hoping this will wake up my spec C hatch, coupled with a sports cat. Full titanium.

I've had the following exhaust setups:

1. MY00 UK Turbo (OE headers throughout):
a) standard DP, 2.5" non-reasonated centre pipe and the original Prodrive backbox
b) standard DP, 2.5" non-reasonated centre pipe and a Ninja 2 backbox
c) sports cat DP, 2.5" non-reasonated centre pipe and a Ninja 2 backbox

2. Version 6 STi:
a) GT spec headers, de-cat DP and 3" Apexi N1 system
b) GT spec headers, sports cat DP and 3" Apexi N1 system
b) ported OE headers, sports cat DP and 3" Apexi N1 system
d) ported OE headers, sports cat DP and 3" Blitz Nur Spec system

Thoughts:
1. a) Pleasant but far too quiet (a de-cat with this system might have been nice)
b) Lovely - just what I was after in all honesty!
c) A slight(!) improvement over b)

2. a) Obscenely loud and raspy...embarrassingly so! Really didn't like the GT spec header sound.
b) Moderated a) slightly
c) Huge improvement, generally very nice but lacking the lowdown burble of my previous car (sounded better further up the rev range though!)
d) Very deep burble but annoyingly loud, boomy and intrusive - nowhere near as bad as a) or b) though

It could just be me but IMO, based on my experience, 2.5" sounds nicer than 3". With the right system you can get a lovely low down rumble that's loud enough to sound good and get some looks but without being embarrassing or off-putting on longer runs.

Agreed - 2.5" would always sound better. its tighter and gives off more a deep sound. i hate the loud sound of an impreza. its all about a deep burble that can be heard. decisions made. the 3' japspeed is coming off as i cannot even drive it. just sounds like a rattle can of flat 4.

scoobyparts sell the ninja. will call them up and see what i can do.

I loved the sound of my TSL pulse extraction system. This was 7 years ago now though, lots changed since then... :lol1:

Excuse the smoke from the fcked piston rings... This is what the 2.5" GpA replica sounds like...

My current weekend V5 Type R has ported headers, full decat, non-res centre section and Hayward & Scott backbox (the standard looking one), sounds fantastic on tickover, full chat and everything in between, nice and raw. When I got it it had a 3" Kakimoto Regu 06&R with a 3" resonated centre section, sounded nice too - deeper and smoother than the current setup but didn't like the jap look.

My old daily RB5 had standard uppipe/downpipe cats, non-res centre section and prodrive back box, nice and subtle and opened up a bit on full chat, so good as a daily. I always wanted a TSL gpN back box on this car but never got hold of one.
