WRX vs STI for daily running/costs/maintenance/longevity
 

Hi Scoobsters, just after a bit of advice.
Firstly, my budget is quiet small, it will be anywhere between £6.5-7.5k maybe a touch higher.
I will be looking to buy a car within the next couple of weeks.What I need advice on is, if im gonna be using the car as my main daily (home to work and back = 100 miles a week), would you buy a clean very low mileage for example 35-50k mileage WRX or a high mileage (100k~) STI??Which would be better for a daily, whats more reliable and interms of running costs do they differ much?
ps I wont be doing any trackdays or racing etc

sti all day long, stronger engine and stronger gearbox. Don't worry about mileage too much just make sure it's been well looked after,if there are any performance modifications done to it make sure they have mapped in and check cambelt history.

It's a 6 speed in the sti so better for mpg on a long run but be warned.......the mpg is pretty bad in a Subaru which ever model you get.

For £7k-£8k you should be looking at the 2003-2005 blobeye model sti or a nice prodrive bugeye sti.

As above, running costs will be the same between the 2 models. I have used my Subarus for the last 12 years as daily drivers and loved every moment of them. My first was a standard WRX when I purchased it from Subaru which I loved massively, but ended up spending so much money on it that it essentially ended up as an STI. Nothing wrong with the WRX in my opinion, but if you are looking to go up in power and modify then do yourself a favour and start with an STI. Much better all round car.

For your budget I'd be looking at a 2.0L blobeye STI 2003-2005, if yo can get an 05-55 reg widetrack then even better.

Or a forged hawkeye STI.

so I forgot to ask in my op, that is insurance a lot higher on the sti compared to wrx?
I'd love to have a hawkeye sti but they're above my budget :(, don't like the look of the bugeye (personal opinion)

so if looking for sti do I just need to make sure its got full service history (to indicate car has been well maintained in its past) ?

It's a car, no harder or easier to drive than any other car. The only difference between any other car is the petrol costs and the fact you are driving a goldfish bowl and dickhead magnet.
I use my 400PS MY00 every day and have done for the last 18 years.

Yep, if you can find a car with full history and documented receipts from either a main dealer or Subaru specialist, not just any old back street garage. With the Hawkeye models you have to be careful with ringland piston failure and head gasket failure so you're better off with the blobeye shape STI or a JDM 2.0L model which will be bulletproof.

There are still some nice cars out there. Don't let high miles put you off if it's been well maintained by an enthusiast.

Would think the insurance difference between WRX and STI is nothing, certainly no difference for me.

would be perfect to buy a blobeye STI and do a hawkeye conversion lol if it was as easy as that :p
do the JDM cars still make that signature Subaru rumble sound? I read because they have equal length headers they don't make that rumble and are much quieter in stock trim?

i hope your prepared for the fuel bills doing that mileage a week. my old boss who used to own my sti was doing around that sort of mileage and reckoned he put in 90 quid for the one and only time he brought it to work for that week. he sold it not long after that to me lol.

you could do a hawk conversion on the bugeye if you wanted to (bug/blob/hawk parts are pretty much all interchangeable)

my advice is go for a nice looked after bugeye sti prodrive and do the hawk conversion OR buy a blobeye sti (widetrack if possible) and leave the hawk conversion as in my opinion the blobeye is the best looking model

I'm going to go against the grain, and say modified wrx for a daily. Same power as an unmodified sti, and way better mpg, I regularly got over 350 miles out of a wrx tank full, lucky to get 250 miles in my current sti.

im over 200 miles a week to and from work and can do it on a full tank in my wrx.........................even with the odd spirited drive

I'm pretty sure in my.old wrx, I could do my weekly mileage in 30 quid fuel for the week (driving at cruising speeds and not thrashing it), I guess I could live with that.

someone mentioned bugeye sti with a hawk conversion that sounds great. Where could I get this done? Will I need the entire front end - bonnet, wings, headlights and bumper?

also, what is the difference between WRX, WRX ppp and widetrack?

To be fair, 360 miles was driving motorway, under 70, so not particularly realistic, blob wagon, sports cat and filter, 279hp. Current jdm hatch spec C, standard cat, panel filter, hks actuator and fuel pressure reg 359hp best around 220 to tankful.
Is the blob wrx tank 60l? That explains a bit!

Also bear in mind that these are high performance cars and getting on a bit, so you will need to budget for maintenance, or be prepared to do some spannering yourself. Things like bushes may be getting towards the end of their life and be wary of rust.
These cars are very tough, and there is lots of support to keep them going, but they can need a bit of tinkering to keep them driving as they should.

The guy I replied to is a well known Troll. Just last night he created a username (even though he's currently banned) and went online to post mostly aggressive comments on all the threads I'd posted on. He then got banned again last night, created yet another username a few minutes later and put loads more trolling comments onto everyone's posts. Moderators have now removed his posts again thankfully.
