Honestly, ABRs are a sign of failure when it comes to suspension geometry and design. Usually, the reason folk upgrade them is because they lower the car, and the increased roll torque from the increase in distance from centre of gravity to roll centre makes the car roll more, and stiffening the springs to stop this gives a jarring ride. The Impreza, naturally is slightly unbalanced in that a steady speed roll will cause the car to sit low at the back and lift the front inner wheel. This causes understeer. The reason a lot of folk aim to lower the front 5-10mm is to change the roll centre at the front to alter the axis it rolls about, making the car roll level or slightly into the front corner, giving lift off oversteer characteristics.
Bit of a brain f*ck. But a stiffer rear ARB will support the car more, but it does take weight off the inside rear tyre as a result, so when it does slide, it's quicker and less predictable. Standard STi is 19mm. A Whiteline 3 way adjustable 22mm, that gives effectively 21-23mm is a good starting point.
In my case, it needed re-powder coating quite quickly. I keep it on minimum 21mm setting. I correct the car with the coil overs by adjusting ride height instead. Too much rear ARB can be quite unpleasant over bumps or speed humps.... Keep your head away from the window!
