A good geo can make a massive difference so it’ll be good to here how it feels after that. Have you got any plans to get it on track?

I have allegedly been running “Prodrive Geometry” which was put on the car a couple of years back. I have a print out of the settings from when I had the tyres changed, so I’ll get the geo put back to the way it was
(before I fcuked it up ).

I don’t have any plans to track the car, it’s my daily & don’t think I could bring myself to beat on it that hard as I’d be in trouble if something serious on it broke. Maybe one day once it’s built & up together & not on the original 110k engine etc.

After yesterdays research I really need to pull my finger (wallet :Whatever_) out & upgrade the brakes too as that’s an area that has always been lacking.

What alignment set up are you going for and do you know roughly how much it will cost :)

Is that pads and disks or full big brake kit with braided lines etc :norty:

These are the settings I've been running, that I'll get a local tyre shop to put on the car. Nothing fancy, I just need it put back to where it was before I changed the shocks...

I can tell you how much it costs after I have it done :)

As much as I'd love it to be the AP Racing 355mm 6-Pot Kit I think I'll have to band-aid the issue with discs & pads all round from GodSpeed for the time being :thumb:

Hi, great thread.

Have a look at the Godspeed Brembo 4 pots..and i suspect not a huge amount more than discs/pads etc. Fitted on my classic and they are superb. i had Alcons on a P1 before and these are easily a match for this and maybe a little better.
I did look 6 pot but was told only really if you do track days will you see any benefit.

Sorry, but GodSpeed don't appear to have a brembo 4-pot option? Are you referring to rebuilding my stock STI Brembo 4pots?

I think that's a kit to upgrade the WRX 2-pots to STI-4pots...?

Looks like a lot of kit for they money, but I think the calipers are the same as what I have (but with stock discs & sh1t stock pads).

I've seen a few with Porsche calipers, no idea who makes the adaptors though.

NOSSY_89 08 February 2021 06:56 PM

There are a few Brembo calipers. You won't be gaining anything by changing the your newage ones to the classic Brembo kit :)

Like you said pads and discs. However if you were to sell your calipers and put the money towards the AP kit :norty: I'm teasing lol. How much are the AP kits running now.

For the 355mm Kit £1850 (335mm £1750) - https://www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk/287-big-brake-kits

How come I can't do discs & pads now & upgrade the calipers later instead of buying a complete kit

It depends on what fits with your existing calipers. Have a chat with Ian and he might be able to sort you out. Off the top of my head I don't know what you can and can't run.

Yes, I have a penguin on my parcel shelf.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...6991501e05.jpg

Random picture, featuring snow. I think the rear is now 5mm higher (the shocks are anyway). After backing the damping back to setting 15 (from 20) & driving with the rear ARB on its stiffest setting I am not impressed & am increasing the damping. I think I am on 18 now & it needs to go up more or maybe I need a stiffer front ARB as the whole thing just feels "loose".

Saying that I can't afford an alignment until payday & I also can't be bothered to jack the front left wheel up & play with the camber as it's angled like I hit a curb. So I guess I shouldn't be too judgmental until that's sorted & I've driven it in anger to get a proper feel for the new setup.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...e8efd26d61.jpg

I dunno if I am going crazy or if I've just been scrolling through too many car pages on "the gram" but my wheels really don't fill the arches? It looks like they're just sunk in, even compared to the Polo in the background :wonder:

I like the ‘murdered’ out look! Makes the interior look a bit less plasticky. 👍

Regarding the wheels, I have a thin spacer on my black one that just pushes them out a little. Makes the tire fill the arch.

It does, out of the 90's & into the 2000's, with a little splash of luxury :lol1:

I was thinking more along the lines of wider wheels & tyres. An 9.5J rim with an offset of ET38 & a 245 tyre, up from a 7.5J with an offset of ET44 & a 225 tyre. The below diagram on shows the difference which should be manageable...?

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...2473af89c0.jpg

I'd have to roll, flare & possibly fit a stock widetrack rear bumper & over fenders (as obviously the widetrack is wider track) but they should go on without having to take any drastic measures :wonder:

new wheels are always nice 😎
I have a mate with a blob wide track and he had some 9.5 wide XXRs. He said it ruined the handling so has now changed them. Others on here may have a different experience though...

Do you know if he stretch a 225 tyre on them? “Lots” of people seem to fit wider wheels & the same size tyres .

I know BPR’s car is a 2015 / VA but he went from the stock 8.5J & 245 to a 9.5J & 245 with no complaints.

that’s alarming & I wouldn’t like to find that out after spending £460 on 245’s for all 4 corners?

Wider wheels will slow the steering down & increase tram-lining, was that his complaint or something else?

NOSSY_89 17 February 2021 11:52 PM

Just to add to your obsession

Kaosone 14 March 2021 11:48 PM

So I am crap with time but coilovers were on & after driving about for a bit, stiffening them up I eventually found a setting I was comfortable with & ran with it for several weeks.

I decided it was still too bouncy so one evening I added a couple more clicks of damping to the shocks. Then I was half way to work the following day & I realised it chassis felt much better (close to how it was), the stiffness was back :luvlove: - More on this later

I took the car for the alignment when the guy on the lift pointed out that he'd minced my rear passenger toe adjustment nut so I bought a new set (lowest in the pic).

Seeing as I was going to be under the rear of the car I thought I'd treat myself to a Perrin rear under car kit thing.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...8a0dbcb82e.jpg

Old toe bolt came out with the helf from a £25 angle grinder from B&Q...

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...21e2d1f320.jpg

Not sure why I bought two, like fcuk I am touching the other one :lol1:

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...4bc0d39e15.jpg

Kaosone 14 March 2021 11:51 PM

M12 x 1.25mm Tap for the subframe lockdown bolts...

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...8ceed1cfb5.jpg

Hole in the underside of the car tapped, through the hole in the rear subframe that lines up with it (as if someone originally designed the car to have something similar)...

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...42e956f92c.jpg

Like so.

Locked down & sh1t (on both sides) :norty:

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...52f9fb67a2.jpg

Kaosone 15 March 2021 12:04 AM

Stock rear diff brace, complete with bushes made from bubblegum (fcuk paying £130 for the Group N brace :Suspiciou)...

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...0285bacf51.jpg

Perrin shims sitting loosely where they eventually live :)...

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...f57b69622d.jpg

Which don't want to stay in despite this awesome press I made...? :Suspiciou

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...735efd1f47.jpg

So after fcuking about for ages & the exhaust being in the way of the passenger side one restricting access I was able to have 3 of the 4 shims fitted :brickwall

Looks like my car needs another coat of underseal too :lol1:

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...7480e911ce.jpg

Two fitted in this one
With the theory being that the one shim on the other side should be jammed in place, so it should be easier to get the second one it

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...5b3fb85cd9.jpg

I still have the diff outrigger shims to fit too, the ones that fill the massive gaping void on top of the stock bushes :nono:

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...32c42e8d91.jpg

Kaosone 15 March 2021 12:20 AM

And finally the star of the show, rear anti roll bar moved from the stiffest to the medium setting...

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...44e409c7fb.jpg

Now the car drives a whole lot better...

The car instantly drives off the throttle now, before it would pause for a second so you'd get on the gas, there'd be a delay & then it would pick up. Now it is just instant.

However the star of the show, the chassis setup. Backing off the anti-roll bar. I upped it previously when the shocks were softer, now with the damping firmed up the whole thing was too taught. Now it's still the firm ride I like, but it sinks into corners much nicer, with loads more feel & grip.

Much happier with it now as it's been annoying me recently. Next up to fit the other Perrin shims, raise the front shocks 5mm & then get the alignment done. Maybe experiment with the softest rear ARB setting too :)

I also contemplated getting it corner weighted until about when I saw the price :wall:

RetroPug 19 March 2021 01:55 PM

If you're happy using polybushes for the outrigger bushes, I'd suggest powerflex or similar that can be pushed in by hand as you're clearly DIYing most of this as I have, this makes the job very straightforward:
  • Undo outrigger bush bolts and the bolts holding on the plates they mount to (T-Brace thing should drop a bit but still be fine and hanging on the car)
  • Holesaw out the rubber part
  • hacksaw the metal outer ring of the old bush
  • Push in powerflex bush
This saves removing it from the vehicle.

If you're just using the bushes that sandwich into the voids then disregard this!

Yeah I am just using them shim spacer things to lockdown the stock outrigger bushings.

For £65 that Perrin kit is a bargain, shims the diff brace, outriggers & comes with the subframe lockdown bolts. Also no fcuking about cutting & pressing stuff.

I saw you had to drop the exhaust & driveshaft to get the outrigger mount out & at this stage of my car’s life /build I want no part of that :lol1:

We’ll see if the bolts come out first before anything else happens :Whatever_

Cheers,
Stuart

Kaosone 20 March 2021 11:18 PM

So another dry Saturday & off I went. Got the 4th & final diff brace bush fitted...

I pulled the brace bar out, used the brace itself to lever the passenger side in, slid the bolt in place & then pivoted the drivers side up & knocked it in (which is had to do on the passenger side as the exhaust runs directly under it).

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...6346111168.jpg

Now the outrigger buses, surprisingly these bolts all just came straight out with no drama

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...75aac6d419.jpg

Weird little top hat washer thing on top of the bush

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...3313875b8a.jpg

The weird legs on it made it stand taller than the bushing, making it difficult to get the Perrin Shim in so I installed it on top of the shim like so (& to think the instructions are right there in the picture :lol1:)...

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...1b10e30368.jpg

Now I am wondering if I should have made more of an effort to get the shim on top of that washer thing, but they're both installed anyway :wonder:

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...6a2d90f660.jpg

Kaosone 20 March 2021 11:27 PM

Last job under the rear of the car was to soften the ARB back onto the lowest setting, where it was before I fitted the coilovers (& ran stock shocks with Eibach springs)...

*Note: Shiny new Perrin Subframe Lockdown Bolt / Collar :luvlove:

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...f52bb81bc4.jpg

Finally I jacked the front end up, firstly to raise the shocks 5mm so now I am set for another trip to the alignment shop.

And secondly something I've been meaning to fit for about a year. In the plastic case is the drain bolt (M10 x 1.5mm) from my OBP catch can, an M10x1.5mm Barb fitting & valve...

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...78e251d960.jpg

Barb installed in the catch can & sealed with gasket sealant...

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...706cc37395.jpg

And I now have a dedicated drain line for my catch can :norty:

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...9fa7958ed6.jpg

Simply stick a tray under it & open the valve at every oil change

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...293f8a7560.jpg

BrownPantsRacing 22 March 2021 10:17 AM

It’s been “drain to atmosphere” since I last tried to empty it so this is a much better solution :lol1:

Getting somewhere with the chassis now, I am ready to get an alignment this afternoon & am thinking I could back the damping off on the coilovers click for better “feel” (means taking the rear seat out though :().

I'm still running my MeisterR coilovers on 10 clicks up front and 8 clicks at the read (out of 30 or 32 clicks) and to be honest I love them. Rides so nicely day to day and yet holds the road so much better than the standard setup. Really happy with my old man soft settings.

Can you not get extenders for the rears so you can adjust inside the car?

adam.pah 22 March 2021 12:33 PM

that's a really good idea with the catch can! May look at doing that myself.
