Mercedes AMG CLA shooting brake

Anyone had one?

Interested on hearing what they are like. I’m only looking at the 250 model due to price as the 45 is a lot more.

I’m comparing against the Focus ST-3 estate with mountune 275. The focus is a lot less money and quicker but the Merc is obviously nicer inside and out and 4 wheel drive.

What alternatives would you put in the same bracket as the above 2? Golf R estate is my only other thought at the moment. Only Audi i’d want is RS4/RS6 and they are out of price range too.

I’m contemplating going from a top spec Pathfinder and Fiesta ST-3 with Mountune 212 down to 1 car but there isn’t anything that combines the 2 regarding perfomance and practicality (7 seats/big boot). My Pathfinder is for the kids and dogs family car but only gets used twice a month where as the fiesta is my daily driver.

The nearest would be the 7 seater model of RRS but they start from £38k and well outside my price range as well as big running costs and reliability issues.

I was driving one yesterday, as my best mate has one, not too bad car, handles pretty well and not too 'look at me' type of car, hence why my mate bought it as it makes a decent family car.
Needs a remap for me though to finish it off as the power band is just not quite there, but that's just my opinion as a car guy lol. His is the proper amg though, quite rare not many in amg for in the est.

Cheers so he has the 45 model with 376bhp? I haven't looked what remaps are available for them, I take it they can get it over 400 then?! On paper it's 0-60 is 4.3 seconds so pretty rapid for a family estate  The 250 model is just slightly slower than my remapped ST so they must have a map for that model. Would be nice if that can be taken from 215bhp to 260bhp+

Yes the 45 shooting break, not massive for an estate car but more like a bigger hatchback type of car, bit different to the usual stuff but I'd deffo choose it over a golf r estate and a focus st estate for deffo.
I'd probably choose a rs4/6 estate over it though but as you say, cost.
It's supprisingly reasonable to run being a 2.0, mpg, tax etc is not silly like you'd expect of a amg marque.

Yeah i’d checked out the costs and not much more than my ST to run on fuel and tax. Servicing/maintenance no doubt will be a lot more though. Seems a very good car for performance vs running costs. Can get a 45 AMG starting from £28k on autotrader. Combined 38mpg and £230 tax with 376bhp and 4.3 0-60 are figures I like from a car!

RS4/6 Avant is one of my dream cars behind a GTR but they have supercar running costs so will never be practical or affordable for me sadly.

Servicing/maintenance. I think you'd be surprised at the cost of Mercedes parts.
As for servicing, we'll I've never used my official dealer, only a Mercedes indy.
The last service on my E63 was £204 including VAT
Oil, oil filter, 2 air filters, 2 hours labour.

john banks 16 July 2018 12:48 PM

S4/S6 Avant might be worth considering? The S6 has 450 PS (older models 420PS) 4.0 V8 twin turbo and 7 speed DSG. S6 tune only has similar output to a stock RS6.

540/550i also nice.

bustaMOVEs 16 July 2018 02:42 PM

No, dont go Mercedes for maintenance, shocking customer service.
Find a indy specialist

That's probably cheaper than my Pathfinder at my local village garage.

Thanks John, whilst those are all cars I like a lot the running costs would be too high for me especially fuel. There is an S4 owner in the village and it's a dirty dirty sound when he pulls away :D

Yeah i've always done this going right back to my first scoob. Can't beat an excellent indy specialist.

Sq5 maybe? 3.0ttdi v6 great engine and a bit of room to boot.
Mr banks will tell you how good they are and not too expensive to buy or run.
I'm thinking of getting one for the wife in the future when I shuffle the cars around

alanbell 16 July 2018 08:54 PM

my old SQ5 is for sale @ Phantom Motor Company £30.990. 14 plate cars mint, and has a Revo remap on it , I got £28K px for it for a 17 plate AMG GLA 45 ;)

Funny you mention one of those I saw one parked up today and they look good but the SQ7 would be better with 7 seats but a bit on the pricey side :o I'd rather have the RRS 7 seater for that money.

The CLA is still what's on my mind but i'd have to get rid of my 15 plate Marquez tribute Repsol Fireblade and that's going to be a tough decision to see that go.

That's what I heard on the GLA45.
Yep same on the CLA45, I wouldn't say mental lol, as I was expecting a lot more grunt, just felt too refined in some areas of powerband, hence I quoted a custom remap would iron out them flattish/refined areas.
Great car to drive though.

bustaMOVEs 17 July 2018 09:11 PM

I liked the brapp gear changes lol, not too chavvy loud when it does it either lol.

alanbell 17 July 2018 09:17 PM

Does need a remap, But to new just now, If I could find a ecu to swop over Id do it now, My mapper says it would add 60 bhp/ 90nm, And I trust him , He,s done over 10 cars for me,

I think for them you can get a box thingy, circa £800 though, it was on another thread of guy talking about them, can't remover his name now, but has just bought a new mini clubman s I think. Think he's from Leeds and keeps changing cars. He had a A45 before

bustaMOVEs 17 July 2018 09:25 PM

That's it,Littleted
He mentioned it in thread https://www.scoobynet.com/other-marq...l#post12016232

alanbell 17 July 2018 09:35 PM

It's good to have an individual on side that knows his onions, as they seem to take more time in getting things right etc.
Oh your a bit on the other side of Yorkshire to me :D

An0n0m0us 11 March 2020 12:49 PM

I finally went and test drove one of the these 2 days ago at my local Merc dealership (the saloon not the shooting brake) and it has completely won me over. It was fantastic to drive and the power was superb. Drove it everywhere in sport+ and it's the fastest car i've driven. I also live local to DMS for tuning and their stage 1 takes it to 420bhp. I can't decide though whether the premium for the 2016 onwards revision is worth it over a low mileage 2014 model for £5k less. Also the new model having just been released makes me think this is probably about the worst time to buy as in the next 6 months the original model will start to drop in price?

An0n0m0us 22 July 2020 11:49 PM

Well eventually after a lot of looking and considering I got the CLA45 I wanted in the colour and spec I wanted - collected today and taken at my mates house. Had a 240 mile drive home and very happy with it.

Cheers i've never had a white car before but having looked about I didn't want a silver Merc and none of the other colours hit the spot and the white with black wheels did. I think it looks miles better in the flesh than in any photo I can take of it and those who have seen it have said the same thing. It's like a much more grown up Scoob (I only ever had UK2000s) with a lot more power and great grip/handling and a far better interior and even more expensive running costs! If I keep it longer than the 2 year warranty i'll get it remapped.
