Key has poor unlocking/locking range

Hi, me again with my many questions! You've all been so helpful :)

My key has really poor range for the remote lock/unlock, sometimes I need to hold it over the windscreen in order to make it function. I suspected a bad key as it looks like someone had tried to solder some wire inside it (I guess to boost signal, it had fallen off so I can't be sure!) so I ordered a replacement second hand key and did the codes to attach it to my car.

The new key has the same range, so I'm wondering if there is some kind of antenna or something within the car I can check? Surely you should be able to use the remote key from more than a foot away from the car?

The car is a 2006 WRX Type UK

I've tried that already, didn't help unfortunately -it did cause me to lose the screw that holds it all together though which was a bit of a nightmare to source a replacement for :)

Not sure I like the sound of trying to put 2 batteries in, won't that double the voltage?

I've just replaced both key batteries again in case something was up with the ones I got from the locksmiths, now I have 1 key with semi decent range, and 1 with poor range (the one that appears to have been soldered is poor). That's fine for me, will just keep the bad signal key as the spare.

Thanks (as always) for your help!
