which 4x4?

so i may be in for a promotion @ work and hopefully a substantial pay-rise.

ive been speaking with mrs shrek and as we are not having kids we would like to do alot of travelling around europe etc. we have another couple who are not having kids and share our interests so will need room for them aswell.
i will (hopefully) be treating myself to a 4x4 for this purpose, i originally thought bmw x5 as i had an e53 shape previous and i loved it but a quick scan around has me tempted with a few other cars.

discovery sport 2015-2017 shape

range rover vogue diesel tdv6 or tdv8 around 2013 plate

bmw x5 50d/30d etc

range rover evoque (yeah yeah baby rangerover etc lol) my mate has one and its lovely to drive and lovely inside.

jeep grand cherokee tdv6

i will only be buying through the approved used scheme offered by each brand. anywhere between £18k-£35k.

would i be wrong looking at diesels with all thats going on at the minute? all of the petrol versions have whopping engines which would rape the fuel.

thanks

Lexus RX 4/450h

bustaMOVEs 02 July 2018 06:24 PM

Non of the above apart from x5 imo.
SQ5/7 ?

alanbell 02 July 2018 08:08 PM

SQ5 with a remap a fast suv.

Skoobie Dhu 02 July 2018 09:17 PM

E70 X5, loved mine, drove more like a fast estate car and the opposite lock was very controllable 😀
All the big 4 x4's handing were rubbish by comparison (cayenne the exception). For a fuel it and drive it car it was great fun and bulletproof.

You could get a nice Range Rover Sport for your sort of money and that's what I would go for. Even the RRS2's are beginning to drop into that price bracket.

Discovery Sport and Evoque are on the same chassis, so basically the same car and not as good a Land/Range Rover experience as either the RR Sport or the big RR. Also fitting 4x adults plus luggage would be a bit of a challenge in both.

Go for a Euro6 diesel.

lozgti1 04 July 2018 12:26 AM

I'd love a proper RR. Not one of the other spin offs though. Evoque looks tiny!

An0n0m0us 04 July 2018 12:32 AM

If it was my choice i’d go for the Range Rover for travelling around Europe. Top Gear have always said they are the 4x4 to have for off road and long distance touring. You want luxury when doing that many miles and nothing will beat the RR for that.

i do like the rr sports but scared of reliability issues

ZANY 04 July 2018 04:19 PM

I’m up for a Tiguan if the scoob ever goes a lighter more reliable option than the Range Rover which I’d also love to own personally :(

I do like the f-pace. I'm really a big fan of the x5,I know it's off road capability is poor but I don't want to drive through a field so it doesn't bother me.

bustaMOVEs 04 July 2018 09:18 PM

X5 is a good shout too, 35d or 40d or even x5m

What reliability issues? Like any car there are quirks and foibles and like any car there are good 'uns and ban 'uns.

I've had one for 6 years and done over 60k miles. It has never failed to get me anywhere. I have had some maintenance to do on worn components but that's what you expect on a car with (now) 155k miles. I regularly take it off-road, I do long drives towing plant (which it does superbly) and I treat it like a scooby on the twisties. It is a bit harsher on suspension components but its 2.5t so not surprising.

My partner's RRS just doesn't do enough miles to be unreliable

If you're thinking of any in the LR range, then the RRS is just as reliable as the rest of them.

been reading about them and from what i can gather the petrol version is more reliable than the diesel version.

i could live with the fuel bill............i would just charge my friends more petrol money when we go away :norty: :norty: :norty:

Puff The Magic Wagon! 05 July 2018 05:53 PM

More Smiles Per Gallon with a petrol, partner's Supercharged is seriously rapid and sounds beautiful.

But there are more diesels about, so possibly why there are more tales of woe. TDV8 was sometimes meant to have problems but I think the SDV6 is OK. Have a look on rrsport.co.uk and there's a recent thread about reliability in General.

Skoobie Dhu 05 July 2018 09:36 PM

If you're thinking JLR I'd also have a look at the discovery sport forum, yes it's a different league to the RR's but it shows how poorly some of the models are designed and built - looks like they're still gluing the B post in some of the new cars. I liked the look and dimensions (big boot) but after a work colleague got a new one and after a solicitor eventually threatened JLR with legal action they took it back and refunded his money - and JLR then sent it straight to auction for some other poor mug.
At the time I browsed the forum and was amazed at the common problems with a brand new model.

On the RR's defense, my other half has been driving a brand new F Pace, RR sport autobiography and today was a RR Velar - RR sport is a clear winner so far (although the F Type R convertible last week might have done better if there was somewhere for the dog..)
