2005 STI Wide Track needs new Shocks

Hi Guys,

My car is doing quite a lot of knocking noise from the suspension, even the front I think...

At the rear I have some KYB Ultra SR rusty AF...it is supposed to be the original springs but the ride is so harsh I am wondering if stiction is not affecting the ride badly.

I wanted to replace front and rear shocks by some KYB Ultra SR, but I realized it's not straight forward.
I can do a lot of mechanic by myself (Check my restoration thread if you like, Here), but I prefer to fit parts specifically made for my car.

I found out about the Pedders suspensions, seems to be a good deal for the price.

It would lower my car which I am not against as long as I can still park one side on pavement.

Does someone use those and have a Ride Height measurement to give me? would be very nice!

Thanks in advance.

stay well clear of pedders, i had 3 sets in 3 months under warrenty due to knocking and sacked them off for perrin flex z and they are mega. Also lots of folks on here who have had the wide track fitment ones have had the same issues.

Thank you for your input which have I seen a few times around...;)

Those are coil over?

Is your car a Wide Track? Is it VSS64-C1SS4 you did get?

Does someone know the oem Wide Track Spring Rate?

Angus

Tidgy 30 June 2018 04:32 PM

mines a hawk sti so wide track fitment.

http://www.tein.co.uk/srch/uk_search...7&item=default

VSS64-C1SS4

I think the rear noise is a spring issue.

Angus0413 30 June 2018 06:43 PM

Do you suggest the rear springs collides?

No...Can only hear it at low speed like <35mph when Road Inputs do not always beat the stiction.

knocking is a top mount issue not spring issue.

the rear springs are pretty soft though

The rear noise from the Pedders - I think it's spring related.

Does your experience confirms Pedders Wide Track kit makes noises as Tidgy relates?

I did a test with the car, I pushed down an released each corner.

At the rear there is a low tone noise, not sure if it is stiction... but front left is what really annoys me, that's quite loud, I think that's the one I feel in the pedals at low speed!

Have a look here

After reflection, seems like ARB drop link being loose...
Would be surprised to have ****ed up like this when fitting back freshly powder coated ARBs and PowerFlex Bushes...

Hi Guys,

Do you know if Bilstein does something for my car, can't find it on the website but someone else knows probably better than me.

Yes is the short answer. Blisten B14 & B16 kits available but couldn't confirm exact model numbers

Rear shocks on my bug STI were knocking their backsides off when I bought it.
My original intention was to go for a set of the KYB Ultra SR's but when I saw you'd need to potentially replace the top mounts and the protective rubber (can't think of the name of it - bit that goes round the exposed shock to prevent dirt / water ingress) it started to look more expensive, and I heard that the SR's eventually suffer the same failure as well as being firmer than standard.

I also considered the Pedders but heard bad things about rust and reliability.
Bilsteins etc were out of my budget so ended up with a set of the Meister R's from the group buy.
Having had 2 sets of BC's and also a set of Racing Logic coilovers on previous Imprezas I'd say the Meisters are the most comfortable out of all I've had, but are still slightly firmer than the original shocks were on lowering springs.
Right now I'm running them on about 8 clicks from soft all round, it's not too bad.
The quality of the kit is better than the BC's or Racing Logics in my opinion, especially the design of the locking rings and C spanners which means they actually fit into notches and lock into place, much much better design.
The fitting instructions have also been properly translated into English rather than the garbled Google translate stuff you get with the BC's!
For the price on the group buy it was a decent budget alternative, and the support from the guys at Meister R was excellent too.

If I had the money I'd probably be looking at a Bilstein solution from PCM.

Not sure if your budget reaches to this but my wide track, a Hawk, runs on BC racing ZR units. I ordered them +40mm and they came with 10kg/8kg springs. I have useda 6kg spare spring to set them at 8kg/6kg and I'm very surprised that even with far harder springs than my previous ER set, they run much plusher. Really nice quality. Because they're inverted and susceptible to dirt, they only have 6 month warranty and are meant for track, but I run them at full height and they are sitting at O.E. ride height so no issues there.

I run shock socks to keep them clean and am delighted with the feel and performance. I am probably a little soft still, as there's a touch of bounce in them at 18 clicks out on the rebound. All Compression is full off as they have bottles you strap in the car and give separate adjustment for high and low speed compression.

The best £1,700 I EVER spent. Absolutely phenomenal feel.

:wonder:

I used brand new B14's on my FSTi - 1K miles later ALL 4 were knocking (low speed), plus crashed terribly on compressions and bumps - terrible

Sent them back and had all the strut body bushings replaced. Sold them after that

Angus0413 19 July 2018 08:22 PM

**** me... such a difficult choice...

Thanks all for you input.

For now I might just take them off, try to understand what's wrong, if something is wrong and then I will see.

Oem widetrack sti, when new, f386/r363mm 223/195lb/in (217/171 at ride height)
Pedders widetrack sti f349/r333mm 210/214lb/in (?/? at ride height) Too low, too soft. A roll centre kit wouldn't compensate enough.
