rattling gear knob
so my 2007 hawk sti has a rattling/vibrating gear-stick and its driving me crazy.
its like a metallic sound and under the knob there is a round metal piece which is loose and spins around im pretty sure its that. it sounds like a thousand bee's stuck in it. any ideas how i can fix it? is it a common issue? |
The round plasic piece under the 6MT gear knob is the reverse lock slider knob - item 7 below
http://static.opposedforces.com/epc_...1494935007.png This is attached to the shift cable assembly. The OEM lever has a plastic coating on it where the slider moves up and down and can wear with time until it begins to rattle. Reverse Lockout Rattle Fix you may need to sign in to see images but have linked it below https://oi59.tinypic.com/10zmdko.jpg if adventurous you can use suitably sized electric heat shrink........... |
I have changed the reverse uplifter on mine to an anodised one which not only looks great it also feels so much better than the plastic stock one fitted to the car.

Maybe this helps. Been looking at getting one myself as I‘m getting a rattle when shifting. They don‘t have a uk or european distributor but do ship internationally. Looks good quality. The way shrek is describing it sounds like there might be more to it than just a worn reverse lockout slider. :wonder: |

Is the R logo milled/recessed? Or just painted on? I was considering ordering it in black and paint it to mimic the OEM part. |

it is recessed so you could paint over or if you have a black one leave it... all down to you once fitted.

I found a simple fix was to spray liberal amounts of white ptfe grease down the lifting mechanism between that and the thread. It sets when it dries and creates a layer which stops the rattles. Simples.

Yeah, getting black and leaving it as is would probably be the easiest. That‘s what I‘m after get rid of the rattle and make it feel more solid. Thanks for the tips!
