2005 JDM WRX Sportwagon
 

As mentioned elsewhere, I picked up a 2005 JDM WRX Sportwagon on Saturday. :)

Standard apart from an STI GeNome backbox and a bodykit (manufacturer unknown).

I'm loving it so far. Lots of character, fantastic sound and very agile.

I can't turn off the head unit (Japanese Pioneer of some description) and the alarm fob is a mystery for the moment. :lol1:

Very nice. Unusual to see a WRX imported. Not sure on the bodykit. Interesting to see that the JDM WRX gets STi style speedo cluster.

Nice one .........guess we are both unusual!...got this one for the wife last year. Swap out the head unit......what's up with the fob?

I was out and about in it earlier. The head unit seems to have switched itself off so I'm going to leave it alone for now. :lol1:

The fob has obvious arm/disarm buttons but it also has various other numbered buttons whose functions are unclear. I experimented this morning and they seem to set which doors are unlocked when you press disarm, e.g. one button disables the rear doors and the boot; another button just disables the boot.

Remember when I bought my spec C, had that Carozzeria (or whatever it is) system in it (its the Japanese version of Pioneer). Took me a good few hours to take everything out, including the ridiculous 90’s style parcel shelf speakers lol.

After struggling to start on Friday morning (starter motor turned over for about 20 seconds before the engine fired) it almost left us stranded in a car park yesterday afternoon. All the dash lights came on, everything seemed OK but it wouldn't turn over at all. After jiggling the key around in frustration for a few minutes it finally started just as I was about to call the breakdown lorry. My first thought was battery but it seems to have charge. I also had problems on Friday with the doors not unlocking as expected; I'm wondering if the fob is playing up. I'll be taking it in next week if I get chance.

I know you roll the dice with older cars but I'm a bit miffed to be having issues so soon. :?

The fob does seem to be the problem, presuming it's not alarming and just immobilising the car. Try opening using the key in door lock only, see if if makes any difference.

Could be fob battery? mine played up (open/close only) cured with fresh battery, yours does sound a more complex aftermarket setup.

"jigging the key around" does some what suggest fob is at fault. good luck! finding the issue..........:thumb:

The fob sets the alarm as well as locking the car. I haven't tried unlocking it just using the key because I suspect the alarm will go off. What's perplexing is that there are several other buttons on the fob that don't seem to do anything except (maybe) change which doors are locked/unlocked with the main arm/disarm buttons. Whether the fob is the cause of the issues, I think I want the alarm replacing with something that makes sense/isn't Japanese. :cuckoo: :lol1: The ordinary key has simple lock/unlock buttons but either the battery's flat or it's been disconnected: they don't do anything.

I see what you mean now separate fob for alarm causing the issues!!. I,d do as you say and replace with a decent alarm of known quality.


I do remember having to use the key to open car "Cortina" (before alarms & central locking), a screwdriver worked just as well :lol1:

After taking the battery out to check the code and putting it back in again it found a bit of juice from somewhere (it started to beep again when the buttons were pressed). I got the car unlocked and it fired first time so I took a gamble and drove to get the new battery. After replacement all four doors and the boot opened on a single press several times in a row and the car started without any of the issues I had over the weekend. I'm not jumping to any conclusions but hopefully it was just the fob battery.

Have you spoken with QVS? They should be helping out as there is less than 30 days since purchase.

I wanted to wait until I knew a bit more about the fault before contacting QVS. If, as I hope and as I mentioned in my post earlier today, the issues were caused by a dying fob battery then I'll have no need to talk to QVS. :) If it turns out to be something more sinister then I will definitely by talking to Russ again.

The car left us stranded yesterday so it wasn't the fob battery. Thanks to a very helpful chap with some jump leads we managed to get it going again. He had a look at the battery: if it was healthy he said he'd expect to see a green disc through the small window on the top. All he could see was black so today I'm going to try to find a replacement.

The dimensions are the same but the startup power is lower. I don't know anything about electricity. Would this be a suitable replacement?

Halfrauds are way too expensive. Try COSTCO or a good parts dealer.

Too far away or not open on Sundays. I needed it running again by tomorrow morning.

New battery's now in. Let's see how long it lasts. :lol1:

Fired first time this morning without the hesitation that I was getting with the old battery. :thumb:

Now that it's fixed I'll be looking to move it on. It has nothing to do with the battery. My circumstances have changed and I need to get something more practical. I've spoken to QVS but their offer was, to put it politely, on the low side. I know I'll take a hit selling it soon after buying it but what do people think a reasonable price would be?

As I mentioned in an earlier post it's in amazing condition.

I did say QVS seem to charge £1.5 to 2k more than other importers. Not sure why to be honest as their stock is no better or worse.
Nearly £8k is very big money for even a JDM Blob wagon.

Lesson learned.

What a pity your having to sell it on so quickly. Won't find a uk model in that minty fresh condition that's for sure.
