MY98 WRX Club Spec Evo 2

Hi all,

my names Tom, I'm from Australia and currently own a limited edition MY98 Impreza WRX Club Spec Evo 2.

I used to own an AUDM MY05 WRX STI back when I was 21, loved the car to pieces and spent a decent bit of money on it during the short 8 months of ownership. The car was mint! The car had its major service (Literally everything was replaced consumables wise!), all the dents removed, new front lip, new genuine front side spats, new tyres, new pads and rotors, a new dyno tune by MSR (had an old MSR road tune) and various other bits to tidy it up. Then I made a mistake. On a wet night I thought I'd test out the DCCD, be a hero, and I set it to rear bias. Long story short, I lost the rear end and braked, made it worse and went up a kerb and through some ATF fencing. The car was battered, a lot of superficial damage...and written off.

Fast forward 5 years and I felt confident enough to get back into the Subaru game. Times had changed and I couldn't afford to buy an MY05 STI as a weekend car, and I didn't want to daily one. So I started my quest for a GC8 Classic, specifically a Club Spec Evo 3. In my opinion, the best WRX ever released in Australia. Turns out they are hard to come by, and when they do pop up they are worth more than I wanted to spend!

After a few months I saw a Club Spec Evo 2 come up for sale. High KM's, but the major service had been done, it had a new genuine clutch installed, was almost stock except for an exhaust and had the front end resprayed due to stone chips. I went for a drive and liked what I saw/felt, the owner was a genuine guy and I think he thought the same of me. I went home that afternoon leaving a deposit!

So the car got it's initial run in on the dyno yesterday and showed some signs of clutch slippage.
Previously the car made ~230hp/236ftlbs at the hubs on 18psi. It now make 290hp/287ftlbs at the hubs on 16.5psi, but this is where the clutch starts to let go. Dyno graph is attached for a comparison. The ported heads are really making a difference!

I've ordered a Mantic Stage 2 clutch to go in after I've run the engine in for a few weeks, then hopefully the car will run 18-19psi and crack 300-310hp.

Dropped the car off for some paint work recently, 3 minutes after picking it up the original 5 speed let go. Coincidence... I don't know??

So I tracked down a TY754VB5AA 4.44 5 speed/Diff from a AUDM WRX (2004), same ratios as the V/VI STI and JDM peanut eye boxes. It's all installed with the new Mantic clutch.

Had the car retuned but couldn't make any more power, just a fatter torque curve. Turbo has run out of steam only being a big16g. Pulls very nicely! https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...4d7d92dd0d.jpg

lovely build mate, tastefully done.

I do wonder if you can get the PSR manifold in the u.k? Are there any clearance issues on a standard sump or is the EJ25 sump a necessary swap?

Cheers :)

I think the PSR headers may be the ones that RCM sells, produced in the same factory in Taiwan.
This manifold needed the 2.5L sump, pickup, dipstick and tube. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...3953e5a20.jpeg

Then I had them coated by Hi Octane Coatings in Sydney.

Now that is nice!

I've got a Show n Shine competition this coming Saturday, so I spent the best part of 11-12 hours this weekend prepping the paint work. Not perfect close up, but still looks pretty mint.
