Limiting my download
Weird issue .. my PC is limiting my download speed.
When the PC boots the internet is great, then all of a sudden, could be hours, days or weeks, the internet drops to around 2mbps, reboot and it's fine again. I don't touch the modem and all other devices remain able to download. Really odd :Suspiciou any ideas? |
If you do a lot of downloading its possibly your ISP throttling your download speed.

Interesting theory .. I've not read about anything but I use it for internet only 99% of the time |
Wifi or wired?
I've had issues with my desktop PC intermittently topping out at 120mbps on a 1gbps wired connection in internal file transfers. Sometimes it'd die totally. Obviously first symptom was speed test showing slow internet when I should have 200mbps, it was only until further investigation that I found the problem wasn't just internet but anything to do with the LAN. Never got to the bottom of it. Its a Gigabyte board with Realtek onboard NIC. A PC at work did the same..again a Gigabyte board with Realtek onboard NIC..hard drive corrupted the OS on it though and haven't touched it since. Coincidence? |

Worth trying to measure file transfer speed to another device.
If that's slow as well, then its swapping cables, switches/routers and reinstalling drivers then trying another NIC. |

Your ISP will still see you as the same IP at your router, your PC may well get a different IP, but as far as your ISP (and the rest of the world) are concerned, it's still you.

If you are on Virgin, if using a SH3 you can change your IP by switching between modem mode and back to router mode. Will need to wait ten mins though and will depend on the MAC of what's attached to the SH3.
Back in the day when Virgin just provided modems (not routers) you could just change the MAC address of whatever was attached to the modem, reboot the modem, then bingo, new IP. Besides, you need to confirm if the problem exists when transferring data within your internal network. |

Another thing to try is turning OFF Qos. If it's an option within the router and Ethernet driver settings.

dropped back to 2MB last night.. until I restarted
