I'd put a bet on that there could be a ringland issue.

What are the usual symptoms of ringland failure?

mine did exactly as u described. ECU detects knock and pulls boost back. Thinks there's nothing wrong after a while and goes back to normal boost (you disconnecting battery probably speeds that process up)
when it feels sluggish , that's it off a cylinder. (Mine was 2 and 4)
mine let out a cloud of smoke on start up one day and that ended the mystery.

get it to a mechanic ASAP as mine only damaged pistons and nothing else.

Would a simple compression test tell you for sure if this was the problem? Just for my own curiosity.

As said, compression test, look for smoke, check fluids, listen for unusual noise.

What is the spec of the car, mileage, service, recalls/corrective work?

Robert.
