Driving to mot on sorn

I know you can drive to an mot without tax, does this apply when it's on sorn? Afaik the only way to take a car off sorn is to tax it.
Cheers
Rich

AFAIK you are safe to drive directly to the MOT station but that is all,

Must be booked in and be able to prove this

JDM_Stig 26 April 2018 01:28 PM

I drove mine for an MOT with no tax or current mot, as long as it is booked in and you arent 100 miles away you should be fine, without a current MOT and insurance I dont think you could buy tax if you wanted anyway.

Car is insured and booked in Monday

jaygsi 26 April 2018 05:48 PM

Yeah should be fine. I drive to mot place sorn. Worse case you get reported to Dvla by which time your car would be taxed :thumb:

It's a local ish garage I always use,I just ring, book in,take it in the morning and pick up when it's passed or failed, never get an email,Not even sure he has an email lol

gussy 26 April 2018 07:42 PM

Ossett I have been doing the same with mine for the last 3 years never had a problem so you should be ok

ossett2k2 26 April 2018 07:46 PM

Nice one cheers gussy :thumb:
It's only about 7 miles but I pass a load of cameras, just wanted to be sure.

mickywrx 26 April 2018 08:14 PM

Can't tax it without valid MOT, Rich, however you could be in a sticky situation should you get pulled on your return journey.

Just to add, when the new MOT rules come into force, but, if it's failed on anything deemed "major" or "dangerous" then you can't drive it back.

It's a bit of a worry micky, hopefully pass but if it does fail then the garage only do mot's,it will be driven half a mile to my mate a mechanic for any repairs.

Would be interested to know the law on driving a car from an mot station to a garage having failed? Would it have to be trailered? Would it need to be driven by a registed garage/mechanic?

lol Rich it's like looking in the mirror.

To the best of my understanding it would have to be trailered/recovery trucked, Rich, in the eyes of the law.

mickywrx 28 April 2018 07:48 PM

Can't drive it according to this from the new change, currently I think you can legally.

Car passed so very happy
Almost forgot how nice this car is to drive!
It would be rude not to tax it now.....just need some sunshine then the 3 port bcs is going on and I'm off to do some road mapping :D

jazzyjembreaze 30 April 2018 06:17 PM

I could see there was a potential to get pulled if spotted by the law (slim chance) but even then if it's booked in then wouldn't/shouldn't be a problem.
