Power Steering Pump (Turns Steering by itself)

I've had my power steering pump off my v4 classic for about 2 weeks.

I refitted it last night, topped it up with fluid (atf dexron 3) went to turn my wheel left to right.

The steering takes off and does its own thing. While looking at the pump, it locks up solid occasionally and screeches alot. It turns over freely by hand.
The o ring on the housing is not leaking and is ok.

It seems like the return and feed pipes are reversed, but its not the case.

The return coming up from the driver side leg which runs into the pipe which goes up the rad and into the top of the pump.

The feed from the pump (banjo) was never taken off.

The system would have been low on fluid, but it was parked up prior to the pump coming off

Any ideas?

Try a rebuild kit or just stick a new pump on?

Sounds more like a problem with the rack itself (control valve) or it's full of air that needs to be bled out by rotating left/right a number of times.

I can't see a rack going bad for no reason in a few weeks.

As for the system being full of air , its possible although the system is more less full with fluid. These usually bleed themselves up no?

Unless I try and bleed it at the rack
