iv never been on it ,

I hardly use it, but have disabled all the search features within it now. I never use the app only browser. I gave false information when setting up Facebook account. Never trusted Facebook or other social networks.

I only caught on recently , after getting peeved off with constant adverts , that it has targeted ads from what you "like" or "share" or "tag". So say for eg. you tag a mate in a football clip. You have no interest in football but a friend of a friend "shared" it and you tag a mate coz it has some relevance to him. Then the next thing you know it's showing ads for football stuff that you have no interest in. Times that by how many other random things u "tag" people in , soon adds up to a whole lot of nonsense popping up on your page.
I went into settings and right enough under interests (decided by them) were the likes of women's fashion, football . . . .the list went on. I deleted all them , selected my own actual interests, turned off the auto thing, and it greatly improved it.

fair enough there's not much updated when I log on but I'd rather that than a load of nonsense.

30 in a week. Deleted it over 5 years ago now. Haven’t missed it one bit. Ultimate spying/showing off tool, not to mention throwing all your info online for everyone to see. People advertising they are going on holiday - leaving their house/car unattended, what they have had for breakfast, lunch, dinner everyday etc :lol1: big brother at its finest.

Love people’s reaction when I say “I haven’t got Facebook” :D

Never understood the attraction

Common sense, like anywhere else on the Internet (like here) only post up what you are comfortable with being public, regardless of "privacy" settings.

I noticed odd things with FB about 7 or 8 years ago, I never actually signed up, my mate's wife signed me up (yeah, don't even go there :lol1: ). Once I'd 'taken back control' I quickly noticed how difficult it was to "properly" remove either the whole account or content, all you could do was hide it or 'turn it off'.

Then it spammed my email and persistently badgered me for my phone number. Fook off! Of course it's for security reasons. Put it this way, no online organisation has my mobile phone number. Not even online shopping..if mandatory they have the office phone number at work!

I shake my head and roll my eyes when I see my cousin with semi-public profile post from his holiday in Australia whilst his account clearly shows his location and his home address via locations tagged on his pictures...he's already been burgled once, you'd think he'd know better! :rolleyes:

So FB is only used to stalk woman I find via Tinder and to create an online ID to make me "look" like less of a weirdo (as social experts claim..only weirdos have a blank FB profile :norty: ).

Did anybody really believe these 'social' networks were only ever created out of some kind warm glow of togetherness uniting people across the planet

Went off it about 6 months ago, nearly as many strident socialist prats on there as on here.

My entertainment in spare time is reading the FB commentary in response to news articles. Especially that via the Mail or Guardian. Ironically the commentary via the Sun is quite reserved in comparison. :lol1:

The golden rule is never contribute. Unless via a anonymous account...lay down a few breadcrumbs and watch the arguments unfold when folk lose the plot. Not that I condone trolling, well, not on here at least :nono: ;)

Friends Reunited was the precursor to FB.

You had to pay to use it. Hence it eventually failed.

Afterall why charge a user to use something where they volunteer personal info that's worth millions in data harvesting and targeted advert revenue? :cuckoo: And then came along FB who did exactly that.:idea:

Like it makes any difference whatsoever. Companies know everything about you already, and did way before the likes of Facebook, Twitter ETC. Do people really think that deleting their Facebook account will make a difference?

Because no doubt a friend or family member will have tagged you in pictures and synced their Facebook contacts with their phone book on their phone! There are a number of cases where people who registered on FB via the web site (not the app), given minimal information (name and email, nothing else), and then had FB 'suggest' people that they know with pin point accuracy, even business clients from half way across the world that should, given a fresh account FB should have no idea about! Unless another party shared their contacts list.

Just by logging in at work when leaching off the wifi it can tie you with work colleagues. That could be awkward if you have a feed hating on your boss LOL

it would be intresting see how far /quickly something like fb could fall though ?

Loyalty cards, your Geotagged phone and even your car are all sources of your info.

I've been on there a shocking 10yrs and dread to think how much of my life i have wasted.

I did close my account in Jan but noticed within a week or so the clubs, garages etc I follow I didn't get information from them via email or phone so went without.

also my dad never visits for one reason or other so me uploading videos of my children growing he is able to see them.

Yes you are all right in that its public and anyone can use what I put on there which is why I choose what I put.
Over the years I've seen the contant go down the toilet with people being retarded to get famous but at the same time I've seen some amazing things.

Sadly although there is more hate then love on there it is a tool that every company uses to reach out and I can't see it going away.

I have unliked any page that would give negative thoughts as it makes you site there depressed.

Lets be honest, if you use FB, you're getting it for free, someone has to get paid and adverts are as old as the internet. It's all automated and if I have to see adverts, I'd rather see ones for items I'm interested in.

Cookies, likes whatever as long as you lock down your account so Joe public can't see, I fail to see the problem.

It has caused more rows and upset than it has joy. Which is great for my line of business.lol

It is odd how people take it so seriously .. I only have maybe 50 people on there, I have to know them in real life and they have to interact with me regularly, else I remove them.

When I remove people they get either really ****ty with me or really offended. Like I've made a public statement that we are no longer friends. :cuckoo:

Tam (RIP) used to get like that with lots of people on here when things kicked off; "Ooo, I'm angry with you, so I'll unfriend you on Facebook". And some folk would get equally upset about it. :cuckoo:

Inevitably it spills out in SN, which drags me into it as I'm getting automated RTM emails and I'm like...wtf? Grow up! I have about thirty odd people 'friended' on there, fortyish at its peak. Its reminiscent of the primary school playground "I'm not your friend anymore" (spoken like a pigtailed ginge with an annoyingly squeaky voice)! :lol:

All of them are part of the Facebook empire.

And I've caught Instagram "suggesting" people I know...despite totally separate accounts. It was never linked to FB. Contacts were never shared. I did not give my phone number. I registered using a different email. GPS location turned off. I did not even give it my surname!

Yet by magic family and friends pop up on there as suggestions, and likewise I appear on theirs.

Encryption is just just the end-to-end of actual message content. The actual information about yourself (phone number, contacts, appointments etc) is held and shared, and it reserves the right to send you targeted marketing based upon that. Just like FB.

With Instagram I had to do a bit of spring cleaning/admin on it aswell. If u like/save in collection certain things then your feed will be full of related stuff. Which is totally great when it's boobs or cars, but if like me (I was/going through a bad time) you "like" something that brings you down then you end up wallowing in self pity with a feed full of depressing stuff. I had a clear out of depressing "inspirational quote" type stuff and stuck with the things I like (boobs and cars lol) and it improved it greatly.

All "social media" including forums is great when it's working in your way to suit your personal needs , but when it goes against you and you aren't in the right mind . . . . .

I can't comment on Instagram, but in comparison to FB, Whatsapp maintains a far more limited range of information about you. The only piece of personal information you have to give them to sign up is a phone-number, which could very easily be a "throw-away" mobile or spare SIM if you so choose. They will of course know which other people you're in contact with, but then so does your phone provider.

Indeed EVERYTHING that I've put on there is there, regardless of me deleting it. But as a light user, it's not that much. Although I didn't realise I'd linked Spotify, as such every song I've listened to is logged :freak3:

still running FB myself. Then again I was under no illusions that I was giving a massive amount of data over to them. Much like when people use supermarket loyalty cards and get a shoppers profile, back in the days, but x11.

What does kill me is when people sit there and click on all these "see what you would look like as a celebrity" posts and apps, that basically then take your data as well. And all the, "most people can't solve this puzzle unless they are a genius" or "only people with a high IQ can read this" etc. people just click like and share and give over their details like crazy and they really have no idea what bunch of marketers or cyber criminals might end up with the info they are readily giving over.

So may pages that ask for likes are just there to amass a bunch of interest and then they can sell those pages on to other companies or individuals, and that is just the nice stuff that is done with FB data and such.

I'm not sure that FB will just go away but it might need to morph a bit and pretend to be the nice-guys again (not that anyone will completely trust them again, really). People will still pledge their data to FB, hand over fist, as we are still growing big-data awareness.
