K&n induction cone on Subaru classic

I fitted and induction kit to my 97 impreza if I blip the throttle slightly you can hear a noise coming from one of the sensors on the strut tower same side as the filter. Has anyone had the same issue. It's only happened since I put it on

Rick2017 17 March 2018 06:12 PM

The noise wasn't there before

joz8968 17 March 2018 06:53 PM

Is it a rapid ticking/tapping type of noise?

Rick2017 17 March 2018 09:25 PM

Sounds like it.i put my ear over it before while my other half raised the revs a tad.Its not the engine

Ha, I wasn't getting at that. :D

As suspected, it's no doubt the BCS clicking away.

I can hear it on mine sometimes - ever since I had it mapped, inc. a cone filter, etc. At first I wondered what it was. Then realised it could be the BCS. So I did a test by temporarily disconnecting the connector between it and the ECU. Hey presto, sound gone.

You can do that quick confirmation test too...

boost control solenoid

joz8968 17 March 2018 09:51 PM

Beat ya! :D

Rick2017 17 March 2018 09:54 PM

Is there a way to shut it up lol. You can't hear it when driving

joz8968 17 March 2018 09:56 PM

I guess you could contrive some kind of custom shroud around it, lined with Dynamat...

Correct.

joz8968 17 March 2018 10:08 PM

Oh I forgot!...

When I first heard it it was quite loud (it's the 3-port VTA from the A'PEXi boost control kit). So I simply bought a universal thick rubber exhaust strap from Halfords, neatly cut it to the right size, and screwed it down between the BCS bracket and its inner wing mounting position. It works well. You can still hear it when idling...sometimes...but not enough so it distracts you/drives you nuts. It's very faint.

Rick2017 17 March 2018 10:18 PM

To drown the sound out you mean.I definitely get a better throttle response from this

joz8968 17 March 2018 10:22 PM

Yes, my rubber 'gasket' mod was to attenuate the volume of the BCS clicking noise.

Because without it in place, the clicking was being transmitted through the BCS body, directly to its mounting bracket and on into the wing, thus amplifying the noise.

Rick2017 17 March 2018 10:47 PM

Any pics

joz8968 17 March 2018 11:08 PM

Yes, on my own car.

I'll try to remember to take pics tomorrow and post up.

jaygsi 19 March 2018 01:52 AM

Yes pictures would also like to see this.

joz8968 19 March 2018 12:26 PM

I took a video this morning - I'll upload it at lunch (from 1pm)...

alcazar 19 March 2018 07:18 PM

To the OP: have you had the map checked for the new cone?

What about your MAF?

Sorry for the belated reply (work and all that)

(I don't know why I kept moving the phone about lol :cuckoo:)

Rick2017 19 March 2018 09:25 PM

That sounds annoying lol .

joz8968 19 March 2018 09:29 PM

That's just the general engine racket.

It's only meant to SHOW the gasket. I don't know why I took a video TBH. A photo would have sufficed.

Can you see the bit I'm on about?

If your referring to me no I haven't had it checked .I used to have a forester that I did more to than this had the fuelling checked by Andy carr and he said it was fine on his rollers

OK. Just that cone filters on those cars have a bad habit of damaging the MAF, with resultant engine destruction.

Rick2017 20 March 2018 02:00 PM

Each to there own. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one running this set up .My last Subaru had a ramair cone .I don't go racing with it .I'm a enthusiast if anything. My boy racing day's on the rds are long gone.If it ever did go bang I would rebuild it as it's what I do for a living so I don't mind.I know of a classic import that had a stone go through his cone and got away with it.Is there actually any hard evidence that cones destroy mafs,Not just pub talk I mean .I'm always interested in learning some thing new. I work at Ford we have tuned focus rs here with the cones on with mafs and still running strong

alcazar 20 March 2018 02:32 PM

Hard evidence? do a search on here. The MAF's are very sensitive and prone to damage both from vibration from the cone and from the oils used on some cones.

As for RS Turbo's...a VERY different engine.

But, as always, your choice, your car.
