Am i being too paranoid with my engine or doing the right thing.
 

Hi all. Had my hawk a few months now and its my first subaru first turbo first forged engine ect.
Am i being too caring for it or doing the right thing by not using any boost untill the engine is fully warm.
Before i fitted gauges i never took it over 3krpm for a good 10 min after the temp gauge went to normal.since i put gauges in i dont go over 3k rpm till the oil temp is 90c.
The thing is i only do about 10miles each way to work so its only gets fully warm about half a mile away from work and hardly ever sees boost.
Am i doing the right thing or will a little bit of boost help with warm up times.

I wonder this too i give it a little boost when my oil is 70c about half boost at 80 full boost at 88 just too warm up faster. If I drive off boost when not in traffic my oil stays just below 90, after hard use it gets up to about 112c

a little bit of boost (and I mean a tickle) when the oil temp is at a reasonable level will be ok, cold weather this time of year doesnt help the engine get warm though

10 years and 80000 miles of doing just this has stood me ok :thumb:

I have temp in 2 miles

Oil up to temp in 2 miles?
Water temp goes to normal after that long oil on the other hand does not.
Do you have an oil temp gauge. Dont go off the temp on your dash thats just water temp.

ok, 3.4 miles according to google maps, but yes oil temp
the car doesn't get babied, not abused but not babied , 130k and still going strong

Clocked it this am and its 7miles to work. So about 6.5 to warm up. It gets to 70c pretty quick but the last 20c takes ages

90 degrees C oil temp and thats when you give it boost ?

Daft question, but; where have you fitted the oil temp sender? If it's on the tap point on Cylinder three, then it's likely you'll see Oil temp far quicker than if it's off the T piece fitted on the original Oil pressure sender mounting above Cylinder 1. Mine's on 1 and it really doesn't see much oil movement, just conducted temperature over time, whereas the one in the block at 3 position will get freshly circulated oil around it and see temps far faster.

Oil temp sensor is above cylinder 3.

Not over 3k till 90degrees? I would hardly ever be able to drive mine if I did that.
My normal motorway temps, including spirited slip roads, is 87.
If I have been in creeping or stationary traffic for a while it may creep up to 94.
95 is the hottest I've seen mine.
It would probably get higher on a track but I've not been to one since having this Scoob.

My oil temp gauge starts at 50 degrees.
As soon as I see 51 degrees I drive normally and don't worry.

4.5 miles off boost gives me 75 + degrees then I feel happy to use full boost. (Have had the car 5 years)

how long will it take on idle from starting to get to full temp. With no gauges how do you know when to take it over 3k rpm?

That additives in the oil should all be singing from around 70degc onwards. The oil will still be a bit thicker than stated as it will not reach its advertised viscosity till it hits around 100degc.

I have temp in 1-2 miles as well At constant 3krpm though...

I drive gently until over 70c then give 0.5 bar boost over 80c 1bar boost and 90c full boost. I was getting upto 115c when driven hard but an new oem radiator brought that back down now its been going some if it goes over 100c iv been thinking of blocking airflow to my oil cooler to increase temp in the winter as it often falls to 84c.
I think I over think this alot 🤔

What damage is caused by nailing it when cold?

My water temp gets to 90c within 2 miles my oil takes at least 4. I don't mind as it saves me racing on the way to and from work.

Full boost to 8k redline whithin 10s just after work, 3.5y now nothing wrong, You bought car with wrong engine.
Did the same to UK 2.0
