How do you remove your oil filter?

Just wondering what ways people remove there oil filters. Mine always seem stubborn and stuck on, most of the time I have to use force to remove filter.

When ever I watch videos of others doing it. They always seem to remove them with ease just one hand.

I always run oil around the rubber on the new filters and tighten by hand?

the shreksta 18 December 2017 10:28 PM

lol my mate hammered a screw driver through his and tried to turn it that way...........didnt end to well :)

jaygsi 18 December 2017 10:36 PM

lol that's the method i normally use. It just seems ott, I can't imagine there's loads of Subaru drivers doing the same trick.

it was on his old escort piece of ****

can you not get them oil filter chain-spanners?

jaygsi 18 December 2017 10:46 PM

You can't really get them on the scooby filter well as it hits the exhaust manifold. I've tried with the claw type one. But that was rubbish. Just wondered what others use. Maybe it's me missing a trick.

Used these for the last 8 years without any issue

Opie do a good tool for removal :

Mine always comes off with ease by hand but I make sure not to over tighten when fitting.

Where’s that from? Never seen one like that before

WOW
I have never used a screw driver to pierce through any oil filter no matter how tight it is :nono:

Usually use a big set of slip joint pliers, inherited a set of MAC ones from my Dad when he passed away, not really the correct tool for the job but they come in really handy for things like this and pushing pistons back into brake calipers.

This.

You only need enough force to break the seal, then you can unscrew it by hand.

Rusti 19 December 2017 08:11 AM

If you are using blue filters don't subaru do a genuine tool for removal? Seem to remember one.

just use the K&N filters with "wrench off" nut on them! just need a 1inch/25mm socket

https://www.knfilters.com/wrenchoff_oilfilter.htm

filter only cost a £10

jaygsi 19 December 2017 12:42 PM

I had one but sold it on here. It's it just for blue filters though? As I always buy black filters?

Disposable latex gloves help with gripping the oil filter if you're just using your hand. Also reduced the likelihood of oily hands when you remove it.

How tight is your filter !
It`s put on by hand, so it really shouldn't be taking that much effort to remove, that you will snap the rubber type.

+1
I use them on every job I do keep the oil and grease out of them nails ;)

I also just go for the k&n filters with the hex on the end ...... dont know why all filters dont have them?????

Getting an old one off never seems a problem as 5 bar grips can squish it a bit, but getting the new one on is a reverse of the same problem without the oppurtunity to abuse it into submission.

Well this time I ended up using this little tool.

Not sure what it is, but punctured the oil filter with ease. I don't know how they get so tight. I only put them on by hand tight.

Might be handy to invest in a tool though.

Just be aware that prolonged or frequent contact with used engine oil (especially hot engine oil ) can cause dermatitis and in the worst cases, skin cancer.
Always wise to use nitrile gloves or even the ones from your local petrol station diesel pumps at a push.

Samwise 20 December 2017 08:37 AM

I used to use a screwdriver but these days my weapon of choice is a bit of sand paper. Wrap it around the filter and it comes right off.

jaygsi 21 December 2017 04:27 PM

Did think about K&N but there double price than OEM. And I change my oil a lot.
