piston #2 oh dear
 

just had piston #2 compression checked and it's at 20psi as all others at 125-130psi.
bearing in mind this is on a 66 plate 2.5 sti with only 6500miles on the clock .
has anyone heard of this happening on other 2.5 engines or am I just unlucky??

It's well documented that the 2.5 - in the STi application, at least - can suffer ringland failure to the hypereutectic pistons. (The cylinder wall thickness is less than the 2.0 engine, due to a bigger bore.)

Given the symptom, it's 'odds on' that's what's happened to yours, sadly.

Yeh I thought as much but trying to get it fixed under warranty but they are proving a tad difficult at the moment .
the thing is do I really want the same old chocolate pistons put in again just waiting for the inevitable to happen.

Get a borescope in there to see if there is indeed any piston damage.

If you can afford it, then defo get a properly built 2.5. You'll then be good for around a 'safe' 450+ bhp @ c.1.7/8 bar potential.

I've been a passenger in a UK hatch with that power (on an SC46 turbo), and the combo of the low-down torque in concert with the high-end power was phenomenal.

will most likely get a set or forged pistons plus a decent head studs and cosworth gasket set.
not after bit power as got a 600bhp wagon being put together at the moment so this is the family car😂

Is the car standard or been mapped?

just a different air filter that's all.

If its a none standard type, Id be tempted to swap it back, just in case.

Who did you buy the car from? Why would they be shirking their responsibilities with the warrantee?


If you get the nod to go ahead with the warrantee rebuild, demand a set of forged pistons and you may the difference. I believe the rest of the components are good for 450 anyway - rods etc... tbc..

Get a leak down test done not a compression test. Get the garage to write a report of the leakdown results stating what leakage the engine has on each cylinder, and take that to the garage you got the car from. Unfortunately Ringland is a very common issue on the EJ25 engines due to the pistons having a high silicon content to make them strong, but it causes the land to be brittle.

Well within warrenty period, get them to put a new engine in but ask them if they will out rods and pistons in if you supply them (at your cost but worth it).

They will replace with a crated motor tidgy not build it...

no, they would either replace the short motor or fit a complete engine depending on what was at fault. they wouldn't build it.

ok here' the latest the dealer I bought the car from is no longer a subaru dealer so basically they have got Teflon shoulders .
the garage that has got the car in there not so infinate wisdom told subaru warranty that it' got a non standard filter on it.
there are other issues which involve the dealer I bought the car from but can' go into that at the moment.
an official complaint has been started with subaru about the original dealer and the not so good advice they gave at point of sale.
will keep you all informed.

How much is a brand new short motor worth? Might go some way to offsetting the forged build if you can negotiate Subaru supplying you with one.

Ah so the franchise isn't Subaru anymore - a lot of them are closing or becoming multiple manufactures now aswell (Europa in Sheffield is Subaru mitsi and merc)


Have you gone to Subaru UK themselves? As the warranty should lie with them not the dealer you got the car from. Fact is, the filter alone will not cause ringlands to fail, on a 66 plate car with 6500 miles that is appalling.

I think the main problem is some muppet believed what it says on the air filter companies website,
apparently a 35bhp gain with no mapping or anything else.
registered complaint with subaru UK so hopefully I may get to speak to someone with half a brain.

I know it's a bitter pill to swallow but would you really want an inferior product replaced with an inferior product......pay for a forged rebuild and reap the rewards.

I have a forged 2.5 in my hawk built by scoobyclinic and in no other words........it's awesome.

Forget the bull**** warranty.......swallow the pill and rebuild it to your own spec

no way to know the condition of the block untill its stripped. may as well have a new engine fitted under warrenty then use that for the build.

what airfilter is on it? i'd be interested t hear what the manufacturer says when there product is being blamed for engine failure

If the garage you got the car from is no longer the Subaru dealer, get independent specialist to do a report as mentioned earlier via leakdown test.

thought I was going to piss myself when the supplier of the filter said no remap needed and still get 35bhp😂😂😂😂
it was a k&n typhoon filter apparently tried and tested in the states but we all know how they like there bhp figures.

so not just a panel filter?

Just fit a standard filter and deny it having an aftermarket one fitted. Just tell subaru uk the car is completely standard and the muppet on the phone got it wrong. As long as its standard when subaru uk inspect it then all should be ok.

If it's a typhoon induction kit i wouldn't cover the warranty either

Yeah, Subaru will see that induction kit and was their hands of the warranty.

Might not have even been the cause but it's the perfect excuse to get out of paying.

How much fuel was in the car?

Don't know if it's still relevant to the new cars but on the old ones I was told not to boot the car when there was less that 1/4 of a tank.

Did it have super unleaded/99 ron fuel. Has it ever been run on normal unleaded?
