HMRC @rseholes AGAIN!!!
Had problems with these for my eldest about five years ago.
recently my youngest filled in a claim for PPE at work etc. They write back saying he's owed nothing. A week later they write and say he owes THEM money from underpayment, so they are changing his tax code. And today, they write and say that because he hasn't filed his tax returns, (from 2015), he's got penalties totalling £1500, and has 30 days to pay it, or else!!!!!!!!! How on EARTH can that be? He's PAYE, always has been since finishing at uni, and starting work, and has never had a tax return sent him to fill in! What should he do? |
Ask them for a full audit report of how they reached this figure. You can then trace back through your sons employment history to see if someone has made a mistake with tax codes etc... I've been on the end of HMRC, if you make contact with them it can help stops the clock and you put the onus on them to provide more information.

HMRC are really annoying.
They keep telling me I need to pay £X amount in NI contributions every month, so I do. Only to get a letter every 6 months saying I've not paid enough, and I owe £x amount + interest. Then I paid my corporation Tax. I get a letter months later saying I paid to much, so I'll get a cheque for the over payment. Only to get a letter a few days later saying I owe the exact amount they've just sent me a cheque for. Bonkers! |
It's nearly all computer generated. If you call them they're really helpful - just stay calm on the phone :)
|
If he has to fill one in and hasn't its his fault , simple !

or b) they sent him one and told him to, (they didn't). ALL his employment, froma age 16, has been PAYE taxed. He worked his way through 6th form at Wickes, and through university summers for national employers doing DIY store renovations. ALWAYS PAYE'd. And he paid his tax, then they gave it him back since he never earned more than his allowance. Try not to be an @rsehole in everything, dpb, just because you lost the referendum, you've become very bitter....:D |
Probably a clerical error alcazar, there is no reason for him to fill in a return otherwise.
|
Has he ever rang them up ??!!
I hope he's not taken your lead on brexit and just given them the finger |
he works 12 hour shifts, 6-6, so is waiting his days off.
|
Mate of mine wasnt allowed his heart attack as an excuse for late submission , so....
|
You aren't reading my posts properly, or are you just on a wind up again, like your stance on Brexit?
There is no reason why he should have filled in a tax form. he's always been PAYE, always paid what they asked. They have never sent him any form to fill in. His shift patterns are the reason he can't ring them until he's days off. Please try and keep up. |
Oh well , don't let it concern you . Just leave it till next year and come back start another thread Again :D
No doubt theyre just on a wind up ! |
i had a dealing with hmrc many moons ago saying i do over a grand in tax
so iphoned them and quoted ref number and once guy came on the phone and i stated i am PAYE thro the company that employed me and how could i owe tax so end of converstaion and never heard nothing again |
Too easy , bit like meekly paying your speeding ticket when youre caught going too fast

Nope. You are either on a wind-up, or really are the @rsehole you come over as.

He's rung them.
They say he owes tax...HOW, when he's always been PAYE? They say he hasn't filled in a self assessment...WHY SHOULD HE when he's always been PAYE and they have NEVER asked him to do so? They insist he once had two jobs and only paid tax on one of them...nonsense. He's either been in work, through an agency, or out of work. So now he has to fill in a self assessment form, which we've tried to do online, but just too many hoops to jump through, and the last line of logging in was elsewhere, (passport etc), as he no longer lives here. HMRC: not fit for purpose. They lose £millions a year from people who don't pay huge sums, and yet will chase the little guy from pillar to post. |

Does not this sound like a dodgy employer - ie Tellin him hes employed whereas actually self emp.....?
You have register for online , takes few days / week get auth . code Then its easy |
Nope...unless you think British steel and the Finnish Stainless producers are dodgy?
And his payslips always showed tax. |
It might sound like a ball ache... and it is tbh, but you can make an appointment and go and see them... or at least you used to be able to, then just take all the physical evidence with him and sit down face to face and run through it with them... I ended up doing this about 10yrs ago and ended up with a nice little cheque.
Presuming he has kept all his payslips, I still have my payslips some going back almost 20yrs and my business accounts, which are over 10yrs old... Mrs keeps trying to throw them out but I always say no bloody chance... exactly for reasons like these. |
Come back let us know what they said
its not exactly automatic to become self emp So, clerical error , dodgy employer or his own dodgy memory |
Not his memory, I'd have known too, as he's only moved out this October.
One of the other two, I think. But I suspect them....they smokescreen. Five years ago, my eldest claimed back some tax from money he'd earned while on summer break from uni. They wrote back to say his tax paid was £843.47, but he'd UNDERPAID by....wait for it....£843.47 the previous year, so nothing was due. We wrote back, basically saying bullcr@p, prove it. And he got his cheque for £843.47 about eight weeks later. This whole thing has been triggered because the youngest claimed for PPE for the last four years.... Threy may just be trying to hang onto it for another few months. I'll update this as soon as I know. |
