Scooby for short journeys?
 

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum and I am thinking of changing my car in the next few months. My number one choice at the moment is an Impreza WRX (blobeye or hawkeye), I have never actually driven one but would love to. however I have read that these engines, particularly the 2.5, need an engine rebuild at some stage. My commutes consist of a few 4-5 mile journeys each day and I am worried that these frequent short runs will put undue stress on the engine and shorten the lifespan of my engine. I know that all engines should be warmed up properly before using the car's performance but I have read that it in the Impreza WRX it is important to stay off boost until the oil reaches the correct temperature which (correct me if I'm wrong) takes around 5 miles of driving. Given the short distances I travel I am worried that I will not be able to reap the full benefits of the car's wonderful engine. Does anyone do similar journeys or should I consider looking for something else?

Yes your right, but i'd say its the same for any turbo charged engine. I would see it a pointless car to have for such short journeys. Other option would be to fit remote start to the car and leave it ticking over, provided you have a drive way or low crime area. Although the car would be able to be driven off without keys.

I run mine less than 3 miles each way to work and back. Had no problems with any car from it. Just drive there and back normally, then go for a run out at week ends.

I wouldn't worry about it, if it's the car you want.
you will soon be finding excuses to go out in it.

An oil modine may help to get the oil up to temperature quicker, and a catch can will help to keep water from condensation building up in the oil as you may not generate enough heat to burn it off otherwise.
Or just make sure you change the oil frequently.

Take a longer scenic route to work.
