Blobeye headlight help needed (North Hampshire)
 

Back at the start of March, I had an unfortunate run in with a pheasant, which smashed my passenger side headlight.

I bought some replacements, which had no levelling motor, and as it turns out, the adjusters don't work, so I have my passenger side pointing to the ground, and the driver's side up into oncoming traffic. I have not been using them since then (luckily I drive in daytime only).

I still have my old headlight units, with the motors attached. A friend helped me fit the new headlights, but we weren't sure about removing the levelling motor from the old units to transfer it over, and didn't want to force it, so have left them there

My questions are:
- Are the adjusters in any way linked to the levelling motor?
- Could transferring the motors over fix the adjusters?
- How do you remove the motors safely?
- Is anyone near Basingstoke who can help? (Mechanically ignorant, here)

I've looked on ebay but can't find any suitable replacement blobeye units, and I don't fancy paying the £400 per side for Subaru to supply and fit replacements.

Aah, good spot. Says it's for the electric levelling, but doesn't say if it has the motor included. OR am I blind a blind thicko again?

You can exchange motors. I've done it on some classic ones. DO have the right type of, and a decent screwdriver. I removed the screws holding the motors and replaced them with stainless ones off ebay, since all had the heads rusted to hell...hence the need for the good screwdriver.

Yeah. I'm just a bit wary of replacing them. My friend and I tried to remove them from my old headlight unit but couldn't work out how to do it safely or without breaking anything.

Ordered one of those headlights, though. We'll see what arrives

It's not unusual for items on opposing sides of vehicles to have differing prices, normally the near side being the more expensive, as it's more common they are damaged due to branches, curbs etc.

Got the headlight delivered. Taiwanese aftermarket. Doesn't come with a headlight motor, though. I'm struggling to find a guide/video on removing the old motor and fitting it to the new headlight. Does anyone know where to find one?

Also, how am I supposed to adjust the aim while the units are in situ? The adjusters are blocked by a reservoir and some other piping. There's a gap in the top to look like a special geared tool can get in to do it, but I've no idea what that tool is

Aah. Yeah I didn't notice the bolt head for adjusting (on the red arrow). I don't have anything to use on the other one. The unit needs the motor to adjust the blue arrow. There's nothing there. I'm guessing the motor will fit in there and then be adjusted from that.

So back to me looking for a motor removal/fitting guide

Edit: Sorry for sounding like a complete dumbarse......but I am. I don't do mechanical stuff at all. I just drive the car :)

So the adjusters do work on the new headlights, they're just VERY slow. Still looking for a guide on how to remove/refit the headlight motors from my old units into the new ones. I can't find anything anywhere, though

Should be straightforward.

Remove from old unit.
Remove cover from fitting point in new unit. Check that the parts inside match up.
Fit to new unit.

It would be a good idea to ensure it's in the middle of it's travel before removing.

Apologies for bumping this thread but I think my query is relevant...

I have a set of JDM HID Blob headlights to fit. They didn't come with adjusting motors. I'm unsure whether they had been removed or whether they were never fitted (I have some documentation to suggest that possibly not all headlights came with the motors as standard?). Anyway, if they had come with motors, they would have been with the 6-pin connector, which would need a new custom loom to connect to the 4-pin EUDM switch.

However, as they have no motors, can I swap the motors from my current EUDM headlights - are they a straight swap and do they include the connector (or is is built into the headlight unit)?

Well in theory it should work....

Managed to finally remove 3 screws holding the motor to the headlight. The last one had predictably rusted solid. Cut the head of the screw off as it only threads into the headlight, not the motor housing, so I could then pull the motor off. Somehow though it had managed to rust to plastic.....so cut it off at the bottom. So now it's free, how to I actually remove the motor from the headlight? There is a threaded bar that connects the motor to the levelling mechanism - just this just pull off - does it have a ball/cup at the end?

So it is a ball a cup. Always wary of applying force to car plastics but it popped out eventually.

I'm somewhat confused as to all the threads I have read about custom looms and JDM switches in order to get the 6-pin JDM motor to work with the 4-EUDM plug. When all you have to do is swap the motors over....I can only assume that people are selling their EUDM with the motors attached or have no motors currently but the EUDM switch/plug is present?

Aah, thanks for the instructions dude. I'll have to get together with a friend and see what we can do.

Both motors had the same screw rusted solid. You may get lucky but assume that you'll have to cut it off.
