Even seen a real cheap refurbished vf30 on exchange basis but I know nothing about turbos

Why not go for a 16g or 18g? 16g will get you to around 340 and the 18g around 370.

20g is a nearer 400 turbo and will be laggy on a WRX.

Usual warning about the weak 5 speed too, I destroyed my 5 speed with a 16g at 340 and wasn't driving it hard at all.

Neither... you'll need to rev the ass off it and the power band will be very short... as will the lifespan of your engine and box working it like that all the time... they'll be nothing below 4k rpm... also you'll only have a 2/2.5k power band

Hybrid TD04 is what you really want if you want a faster car... sure the numbers won't sound better at around 310/320bhp but the car will be faster and a lot more responsive from about 2.3/2.5 rpm which will give you a 5k powerband and a much more drivable car that's able to stay in that very long 3rd gear and fly... then on that odd occasion you grab 4th that speed won't be lost in a pool of empty nothingness. ;)

But hey... your car, your money. :thumb:

Considering something like this at some point.
How about if the WRX Is a JDM car with AVCS? does that open up the options more for a 20g?
Are the JDM Gearboxes known for taking power any better?

On my 2001 WRX bugeye I've used:
a Hybrid TD04, an SC36, then an SC38

I'd go for an SC38 with a Harvey Smith trick up-pipe and ported headers every time. Good spool, lashings of low-down torque, achievable 360+ and (hopefully/maybe) still within the scope of your engine internals.

You will also need a spare gearbox and a set of AP Racing 6-pots. As well as some suspension mods...

Quite a big risk doing that though really... fine if you have cash for a gearbox and engine re-build... but it's a big roll of the dice.

Having driven a WRX with 2.5 bottom end, front mount, headers etc I'd still advise against it... if you really want to drive it hard the WRX internals and gearbox are just not up to the job.

Sure there are those that have done it and gotten away with it... as much as I love the WRX I think one has to stay within the realms of what has been proven to be their limitations or expect some big bills.

But hey... not my car or my money. :thumb:

What about a vf35 or similar? Only really wanna spend 500 max on a second hand turbo
Want min 320hp but has to be drivable like you say it needs a decent powerband

I've got a vf35 you buy for £350 (delivered to UK) which should get you to 320bhp. They are ideal for the 2ltr engine It has no play in the shaft and no crack on the waste gate. I can pm you pictures if you're interested.
Thanks

cracking turbo, well suited to the 2.0 engine, mine made 354bhp on my wrx a few years back and it spooled like a stabbed rat
