Found An iPhone

So, I was tidying up my new car, well replacing the trim over the transmission tunnel and I found an iPhone 5SE in a case.

Obviously the car is mine and has been for a couple of weeks now, so does that include the contents of the car?

iPhone is locked but still has a valid SIM. A missed call from August.

I've phoned the person whom I picked the car up from and its not his/friend's but I guess it could be the actual previous owner's, who lives abroad. Can't get in touch with him or at least he's not responding to calls. He hadn't used the car for a long time and phone not been backed up in 26 weeks it says.

What would you do? Its not blocked or bricked and not lost according to Vodafone, so hasn't been reported as missing. I could give the previous owner a couple more tries and if no joy, then re-format it and stick a new SIM in or flog it on eBay as its still worth something.

Would it pop up on Find-My-Phone for whoever's phone it is if reformatted?

Don't really want to take it to plod and to be fair I have bought the car & its contents.

Correct course of action is hand it in to police, if its not collected in 30 days its legally yours and you wont get accused of theft down the line.

While you could argue its yours, how about having some morals, it's obviously not something that would normally be left in the car when its sold and you know that.

It was the physical taking down to the local station and sitting around for an hour...

I tried to report online but then had to dial 101. After a while spoke to a bloke who reluctantly took the imei and details and then said hold onto it for 28 days and see what happens, if not, then dispose of it.

If they've enabled iCloud you're buggered. You'll need the password for anything. It's why criminals prefer to steal android.

sweet, 28 days and counting then. Even if they do sod all you have still done what you need to do so if it ever crops up again if you come to sell it on you can just say police have ok'd it.

So...

I have spoken to Vodafone
I have spoken to Apple
I have spoken to Police
I have sent email to her icloud account
I have spoken to person I collected car from
I have tried to speak to previous owner and left messages on phone/whatsapp

Should this person not contact me within the 28 days, then the police says mine to dispose of. What can I do to get around the iCloud activation issue? Is this something that Apple would help me with? Otherwise I'll just lob it in the bin and that seems a big waste of money... If I gave it to Apple they'd re-purpose it and sell it again!

Not a particular fan of the online hacking tools and besides, its IOS11 now

You're pretty much stuffed. You can try one of those sites but might as well give me half the amount instead. Apple will recycle it, I don't believe they crack their own security.

True that, stolen or found it’s no use to anyone but the owner. Android? Any corner mobile store and it’s yours. Thieves prefer Android.

Poor sod probably dropped it cos he couldn't get a signal lol

I wish you’d drop yours and stop whining. Sell it and buy a Shamsung.

I think I'd go LG or Sony, if I did

What a dick. Yea and android/LG/Samsung/Sony/whoever also use cloud services that have decent security and are pw protected too

And/or have apps where you can block/lock or wipe/factory reset the device remotely. Which are included as standard on Sammy distros of android.

Crims prefer to nick ipholds because there are more sheep willing to buy them who can't afford a new one.

Thieves prefer to steal Android devices because they like to Hangout and not FaceTime.

I wasn't being a dick, having an app on Android is not the same at all.

As i said that's another option, cloud security is in place by default. Anyway if a lost or stolen phone isn't in a locked state, then the ex-user only has themselves to blame.

If you can't return this to the original owner, many charities will accept old phones
