Gearbox and rear dif oil for standard newage
 

Sorry if I am going over old ground here but all of the threads I have seen are either very old or for modified or different models.


What is currently the ideal oil to use for the gearbox and rear dif on a completely standard 2004 WRX.


The local Subaru dealers have quoted for TX Multigear R 75W-90, but I cannot find this anywhere and don't know if its decent stuff.

If you want a decent quality oil then Motul 300 (75w90) is a popular choice and is what i use myself.

If I have researched correctly I believe I am right in saying 3.5l for gearbox and 0.8 for rear dif? So 5l is plenty.

Pretty sure it's 4.5l for the gearbox and 0.8l for the rear diff.
So you want 5l of motul gear 300 and 1 l of motul gear 300 LS.

The oil for the rear diff is different as it needs to be for an LSD

Yes mate 5L will do the box and diff. if you order from Opie you get a 10% scoobynet discount.

Lsd version is not recommended for subaru open type diffs.

And the cost of the oil change has just gone up again :D

And down again... Thanks for the info. A 10% discount sounds good to me, I have used Opie previously with the club discount for engine oil and filter.

How can a LSD oil not be recommended for the rear diff if it's plated?

As i understand it only diffs with clutches require the added lsd modifiers so no need to use the more expensive lsd oil for open type diffs.

Apologies for what could be seen as hijacking a thread. I replaced both the gearbox and rear diff oil with Motul Gear 300 75W90. I did not differentiate between the gearbox and DCCD rear diff - Its a 2006 hawkeye. Is this ok??????!!!

The rear diff on the 2005-2006 sti models with dccd requires the LS version, i THINK the 2006-2007 has a torsen type diff which does not require the added friction modifiers. If in doubt I would check which diff type you have or just buy a litre of the ls version and replace it for peace of mind.

Yes, the Gear 300 is ideal for it and the capacities are 3.5L for a 5 speed box or 4.1L for the 6 speed and then 0.8L for the diff, so 5L will do either.

Yes, if it's an STi. Gear 300 is fine for the gearbox and diff if it's a WRX, but with a STi, the 300 is the best choice for the box, but in the diff you either want the 300LS or a SAE90 limited slip oil.

After doing a little digging and for clarity for anybody reading back on the thread

2006 hawkeye sti models with gearbox code TY856WG7KA have a plated rear diff and require the ls version oil.
2007 hawkeye sti models with gearbox code TY856WG8KA have a torsen rear diff and does not require the ls version oil.

Hi Tim, what would be the best for the rear diff then as mine is a 2006 STI, should I go for Motul 90 PA or the 300LS.... or do you recommend anything else.

They can be a bit fussy, so although the 300LS is the best oil on paper, the 90PA can work better in the real world.
