Intermittent starting issue

Hi all, I thought I had an issue with the starter motor packing up so bought and fitted a new one but the problem is still there?

Here is what happens, put key in and turn to position 1 (or is 2) and lights come on, fuel pump primes but when I turn the key to start it does not engage the starter motor?

I can push (bump) start the car (so ruling out immobilizer)and it will be fine again for a while then randomly wont start again?

Im beginning to think the barrel may be dodgy as a mate had a look at it and said if you wiggle the key a bit and spend a bit of time it will start?

Is there anything else I should check before going down the new barrel route?

Its a MY99 UK Turbo 2000.

Cheers.

Most likely the ignition switch is dodgy.

Thanks alcazar, is that expensive/an easy fix etc? Has a look online and there are quite a few scary stories about replacing that part such as airbags going off etc and finding the part seems to be an issue also (as in im not sure what im looking for)

Possibly one of the the relays in the Sigma Alarm, it cuts 2 circuits, fuel pump and starter, its possible to trace the wires back to the alarm, connect them together therefore bypassing the relay. Mines done this a couple of times now bit has fixed itself before I've had a chance to fault find. Same age and model as well.

I had similar problem, sometimes the starter would just click. Bought new starter it was fine for a year.. then same issue. Turned out to be the earth strap behind the engine.

Thanks guys, ok so in this order going to try:

1. Check earth on engine
then
2. Find sigma starter wires and bypass
then
3. Get new ignition coil.
then
4. Push scooby into the river and buy a bicycle,,,,,,,,

Turns out it is the ignition switch as alkazar said. And seems to also be linked to steering wheel position (steering lock)

I found a post a from a while back where someone got a new ignition switch and reset/rejigged the tumblers/pins to work with the old key. This sounds like the cheapest option rather than getting the full lock kit from subaru and having to change all the locks.

Where is the best place to get an ignition switch from and would any locksmith be able to reset the tumblers/pins?
