Car won't start....

As some of you will know, I've been putting my Blob back together with a few upgrades. I've been having to run the engine with the maf unplugged due to it not being set up for the induction kit now on it.

Other than that, it started and ran OK when I last tested it Friday night. Today however, it doesn't want to know. Best I can get is a hit of a splutter then stop and hugely difficult to start at all. All I've done today is take off the alternator and put a non aircon bracket on for it, the plug and the bolt connector are both back on ok.

I also took off the induction kit to check something and have put that back on. That's it. Yet it's gone from running to not. It's now got a decat 3" system on it which it also isn't yet mapped for but as I say, it ran with this on when last tested Friday night.

Any ideas anyone? I'm absolutely puzzled. I'm getting the normal faults for having Tha maf unplugged but also P0244 for the turbo waste gate solenoid?

Does the fuel pump prime?

Jay Cartay 13 August 2017 04:28 PM

It does yeah. Further to my first post, it will start with the maf plugged in but runs terribly and wants to die, as it has done since fitting the induction kit. But if I unplug it now it won't have it at all.

Seems to have decided not to start at all now, either way. What the actual ****.

What upgrades have you done - might narrow it down a bit.
I would go back over and check the basics :
Cam and crank sensor conections
Fuel feed and return pipes in the right position
Earth points on the Inlet Manifold and block clean and tight.
Coil pack connectors correct ( black to back )
Alarm/immobiliser working and disarming.

All those have been checked. It's had an FPR, front mount, inlet hose and manifold spacers and a decat 3" exhaust. But the thing is, it ran after all this, but has now suddenly stopped. It started first time no issue as long as the maf was disconnected.

What would cause it to suddenly not run if the maf is unplugged? No pressure but I have tonight to fix it else my plans are in tatters lol. Brilliant.

might be worth a look to see if the ecu is seeing any issues, or any codes stored.

Jay Cartay 14 August 2017 04:25 PM

It's getting P0244 wastegate actuator solenoid A error, and it's getting codes for the maf which obviously differ if it is unplugged or not but are expected.

FPR plumbed up correctly and fuel pressure set when you key on/pump primes ?

Thought I better update this for those interested. What fun I've had.....

One of the faults I was getting was for the map sensor. Tried a known good one and was getting the same fault and with the laptop plugged in I could see a reading of 0.48 with the ignition off, going to 2.550 with it on but engine not running!

Exact same reading with a different sensor plugged in. Changed the boost solenoid and was also still getting the same error there. With something clearly not right, we started tracing the wiring and discovered the ground wires for the map sensor and the idle valve butchered and covered in silicone sealant!!

I ended up getting a replacement loom and swapping it all over. This also meant plugging in the cam sensors the right way round as they were back to front on my car yet worked correctly previously! This always puzzled me. I plugged them in the correct way using the new loom and lo and behold all the electrical errors cleared up except..... camshaft sensor errors!! This eventually led me to the ecu where I found a pin swap for.... the camshaft sensors! Someone has obviously plugged them in the wrong way around at some point and instead of sorting it, swapped pins in the ecu plugs. Honestly, wtf?! So yeah, got that sorted and no more error codes. Unfortunately it still isn't running right because guess what? Looks like they swapped the injector pins for 2 and 4 to make it fire correctly with the loom back to front. Unbelievable. So that's the next job.....

The only time you would need to swap cam and crank pin is when you go from a UK to a JDM ECU,there is also a fuel pump pin that is swapped.
Is you car running the correct ECU?

This is the case on a classic, not 100% sure if this also applies to newage?

Jay Cartay 17 August 2017 10:05 PM

No the crank sensor wasn't an issue it was the cam sensors. The one at the rear of the engine and the one at the front above the cam pulleys under the dipstick.

Ahh I see so for avcs.
Sounds like some cowboy had it before you!

:lol1: at least your finding the issues rather that "not" as the previous owners have. Pat on the back for getting it resolved :thumb:

Good luck with the injectors :Suspiciou

**** happens mate. At least I'll literally know the car inside out by the time I'm done, and it will be right! :freak3::thumb:
