OUT WITH THE COILOVERS

Hi All,

Firstly, car in question is GC8 Type R Ver 5 1999.

Reason for taking them off, the car is only a road car, and will never go on track so it does not need all the firmness and adjustability that coil overs offer.
so my choice is.

KYB AGX bump and rebound adjustable gas shocks/struts.

Genuine Subaru Impreza GC8 Sti Ver 5 6 and P1 red inverted shock absorber/strut kit.

Pedders EziFit sports Ryder Lowering Kit.

The Pedders would be the easier option as it comes complete with springs and top mounts, but I am unsure if they are inverted, and what the spring rates are that they come with. (I am awaiting a reply from them)

The Genuine shock absorbers seem the best option as they are advertised as inverted.

Although I am unsure why Inverted is better but that is what I have read.

Any comments advice or just your opinion would be much appreciated.

Yours PJ

Hi All,

just an update, being told the spring rates for the Pedders are 2.8 Kg Front and 2.6 Kg Rear.

this seems awfully soft to me?

Compared to a P1 spring - which were 3.46 kg/mm front 2.8kg/mm rear.
In old money that's:
P1 - 194lb/in front 157lb/in rear
Pedders - 157lb/in front 146lb/in rear - like lowered, stock-rate, turbo springs

Hi All,

Also just found out they are not inverted. (pedders)

Anybody know how much better inverted are supossed to be?

And where I can get inverted ones?

I've got some new Subaru inverted struts with P11L springs + matching internal bump stops already fitted.

Or, non-inverted AGX here:

The benefit of inverted struts is lower unsprung weight (the moving part attached to the hub is a thin damper rod not the entire damper body).

In practice the difference isn’t that massive imo; other factors such as spring and damper rates make a bigger difference than whether or not the strut is inverted.

I would not worry about spring rates being too soft – for a road car you want as much compliance as possible.

AGX are not a bad option but new OEM KYB dampers plus P1 springs would be my recommendation for an outstanding setup for the road (have not tried Pedders).

Hi Plenty,

Thank you for your input.
I am pretty sure yo are correct, and this is the best option. (original shocks/struts with P1 springs)
And fingers crossed I think I have found some, Just awaiting a reply.
