Sensible 1st car
 

I'm thinking of selling my B!W so I can buy a little car that my daughter can drive as she is going to take lessons. My 5 series is far too big and quick for a new driver so I could do with some suggestions on a cheap to tax and insure car for a 19 year old girl.

I'm still going to have to drive it so don't want anything embarrassing that I have to get out of :). I was thinking of either a mini or a BMW 1 series but I don't know what they are like for young drivers.

Bit generous for a first car.lol

I'd be thinking Corsa, Punto, Peugot, Citroen.

Not makes I'd normally go for, but fine for a teen

look at thew cars the driving instructors use, that's will give you an idea of the most suitable for a young driver
The list lozgti1 put up plus the mini won't be far wrong for a 1st car

Why not just buy a car for about £500 for her to learn in...I bought my son a peugeot 206 to learn in a year ago, it's still going as well as a peugeot can go and it's been suprisingly reliable!
And that's coming from somone who hates French cars...

Yep I'm the same when my lad comes of age it'll be a £500/1000 banger for the 1st 3yrs for 2 reasons, one he can burn the clutch out and bash it about and two he can learn to fix it himself.... then he's on his own.

My plan was to get something 14plate and over as like I said I will have to drive it as well so Im not getting out of some old banger. I will only need it to do the shopping in as my missus will kill me if I take them in the Evo or my van :)

Audi A3, Golf, or BM 1 series, Honda Civic, much of a muchness but all hold their money better than most.

As said, buy the cheapest ****ter you can for her first car, and keep a decent one for yourself, you know it will be picking knocks and scuffs up in the first year.

14 plate and over? Why out of curiosity? Will the neighbours think you aren't doing well Lol.

Suzuki Swift?

DS3 or a Clio, both good little cars.

I've currently got my aunties 59plate Clio here to valet and get some pics ready to sell, unfortunately it's a cat d (slight damage to passenger rear door which I'm replacing, I can get pic of before and after)
It's a 5dr 1.2T in grey iirc about 40oddk miles if interested

i would always chose a banger for anyones 1st car. my 1st proper day of driving. i stopped at a red light bloke behind me wasn't paying any attention. smashed straight into the back of me. killed my 300 quid mazda 323. my next car was a corsa, about 500 quid.

I wouldn't consider a 1 series due to the rwd.

I want something reliable and reliability usually goes with newer cars :)

Colleague has just gone through this with his son - older cars (lower saftey rating) were costing significantly more on insurance. Best balace worked out to be a newish VW - cant recall if it was a polo or golf.

how old is the BM? looking for a 5 series touring at the minute.

Its a 59 plate one of the last of the e60's

VW Polo. Bloody good reliable cars, cheap to insure and easy to drive.

Steve take it from me just buy a cheap run around for them to learn in I bought an 11 reg suzuki Alto for my lad to learn in ,the insurance for him with that car jumped from a hundred odd pounds for just me and the wife fully comp to 1.5k with him on the insurance then when he passed his test it jumped again so I gave him the car and he insured it for himself lives in london now so god know how much it costs,I have just bought a 12 reg Suzuki Alto for a runabout to work cheap as chips my daughter is on that insurance but she isnt bothered and is taking driving lessons in a citeron instead

Gussy, as I said I will be driving the car so that's why I want something newer. I'm not going to be parking my Evo in a multi storey car park when I go to the gym :)

Didnt realise that Steve, if that been the case buy whatever is best for you but check before buying how much extra it is going to cost for your daughter to be put on the insurance you might get a shock hopefully not, on another point once she passes her test you will have to put green L plates on the Evo as she will be wanting to drive that next lol...BTW pics came through alright on the phone will paypal this week

Have you enquired about insurance on any of the cars you are thinking about? Even a £500 sh!tter is going to cost a bomb for a 19 year old. I think you will be in for a nasty shock when you hear the prices quoted.

FWIW, had the same issue here - wife has a great big SUV, and I got a Porsche - neither are exactly learner-driver friendly.

So we got an 04 1.2 Clio. Only paid about £700 it, but it's got 58k on the clock and is in good working condition, apart from a dent in the one rear quarter (so what).
It's a frickin HOOT to drive - I love my toy, but this thing is a trip down memory lane: what motoring used to be about imho.

My (17yr old ) daughter's taken out Provisional insurance - they cover you right up until the second you walk out of the test centre with your license. Then you're on your own.
The good news is that it cost her £500. The sooner she passes, the more of a "refund" she gets (you take out a 12-month cover and get the months not used back - ie once she's passed).
The bad news is that her insurance is going to be about £1 - 1.4k. For a £700 car.

So heaven knows what a "better" car will cost, even if you can GET insurance.....

The insurance will be a killer for a first time driver

We bought our son a VW UP, nice and easy to drive and cheap to run. He pays £750 insurance with a black box through Admiral which I didn't think was too bad for a new driver.

We had a similar situation with my son, a car that we could drive as well as him to learn in and occasionally drive there after. At the time we had a Saab 9-5 and Merc E class, neither suitable for a learner, so we chopped the Saab i for a new Mini Cooper.

I insured it with Direct Line for £165, to add him for 36 hrs it costs £1.01. Once he has passed he will be added permanently at a cost of around £500. As a named driver he will accrue a no claims discount.

We did think of a car just for him, but it was the reliability/safety and extra car on the drive, but also he is off to Uni in London where he will not need a car, only when he comes home.

Cheers bluie, my daughter has always loved the mini. I can't get insurance that involves a black box as I will be driving the car. I don't speed in 30/40 zones but I do accelerate quick and brake late so I don't know how that would work on a black box.?

Insurance companies need to stop taking advantage of young drivers. They aren't all mental. Think older folk are scarier
