My iMac is dead and I killed it

What a twit. About 6 months ago I had to remove the screen to clean the dust, did nothing about the cause and now it's dead, I'm sad. Graphics card swap isn't all that difficult but I can get a working one cheaper than fixing it. It's an 08 and was due to be replaced next year anyhow.

I was tempted to go a bit mental and chuck £3,000 at a new one but want other toys more so got this. Cheapest on the refurb list, beyond my needs.

Ebay models offered not much more and some seemed shady.

Reassessed my needs and went mid range.

27-inch (diagonal) Retina 5K display with IPS technology; 5120‑by‑2880 resolution
8GB memory
1TB Fusion Drive1
AMD Radeon R9 M390
Built-in FaceTime HD camera

So if youd had anything other than an apple you could simply replaced the screen ?

Can you only see fellow apples on that camera ?

dpb 04 July 2017 01:51 PM

Almost 2 year old tech , thought you were loyal supporter !

I can still do that, card and time is worth more than the iMac.

Yes. Amazing what can be achieved with 'limited spec' when you don't have every DIY'er sticking their oar in.

I really want the iMac Pro but use this spec often and know it works for me.

Our designer bod has the i7 version.

If it's not too late I'd swap out the fusion drive (which is a bit less **** than a standard drive) for a full SSD.

The display is stunning, otherwise a fairly meh pc.

Full SSD pushed it way over budget, but yes I would love one, somehow managed to get away with not upgrading the old one so think I'll manage. This laptop is only usable because it has a SSD.

The display is a large chunk of the money and I can't wait to see my images on it, 1 hour left copying data, quite excited. Delivery in under 24 hours was excellent. Keyboard is very nice and I'll have a mouse again for the first time in years.

Yeah, but even a 'porper' spec Mac comes with a spell checker :lol1:

Once you have the OS installed, is it easy enough to create install media & upgrade your disk to a Samsung EVO or similar and reinstall?

You don't even have to do that, the Sammy evo ssd drives usually come with cloning software, dunno if its compatible on a mac mind.

I've only bothered with a few MacBooks and they were a breeze, I won't be looking at digging out this iMac's drive for a good few years yet :D

Recovery key and time machine backup, not the fastest but it works.

JackClark 05 July 2017 05:16 PM

Scoobynet looks a bit ****. Everything else is pretty bloody good.

The only slow with this machine is me moving my head to see both sides of this massive screen.

Loving the new keyboard, not so keen on using a mouse so back on my old trackpad.

bioforger 06 July 2017 08:34 PM

Which one? bet it's a 6500, so still poo (ish) :)

An0n0m0us 06 July 2017 10:14 PM

You can't swap the drives out which is what has stopped me buying one. The ones with 3TB are ridiculous money even on the refurb store.

Get your cheque book out

It's not a hot swap but it's not rocket science either.

I think it is, I'll accept Poo'ish from you.

Wow that's a serious ball ache to swap out the disk

Yup, like changing the plugs on a Ferrari, all that beauty comes at a cost. Highly doubtful I'll ever need to do it.
