On sunday I was racing and then I noticed that something was wrong so I stopped an managed to extinguish the fire. My daughter was a great help:) and she loves the car


Getting the parts together, got to take the front end and technics apart. Powder everywhere. It started in driving direction front right from the bottom.


Needs a respray anyway.


Cambelt will be renewed as well as other parts, not risking anything. The rebuild will have a lot more heat protection.


Please make sure that you have a fire extinguisher in the car with easy access and easy secured. Without the fire extinguisher the car would have been lost. Never thought that would have happened to me.


By the way has anyone got cambelt covers for me and can post it to Germany, of course I will pay for the parts :-))

Do you know how the fire started, what caused it?

You were racing with your daughter in the car? Or was she close by and gave help.

my daughter is 24 years old and in the car , the plastic cover from the inner wing melted and caused the fire, unbelieveable but true

I carry 2 extinguishers in the car now as I had a power steering pipe split at the front, leaking onto the headers and catch fire. The scariest part was that the plastic cover under the car went up at an alarming rate and you cant really get to it. Luckily had a lot of good people around me and it was out within 10 seconds but could have been a lot worse :(

Do you have any pictures or more information on what caught fire ?
it may help others if they run anything similar.

Looks close to where the PS reservoir is... I'm guessing power steering fluid fire :(

How do you get away with such a tiny number plate in Krautsville or is it Swiss registered?

I got told off by the plod for having my number plate 1cm to low and had to go to the TÜV to get my defect vehicle report stamped once I had moved it, then go to the Landratsamt to get another stamp and finally to the police station to show them it had been sorted.

@henrik your right but I don´t know what caused it at the Moment. The headers are heat wrapped, but maybe there was a spot where the heat got out spot on the plastic. I did actually change the PAS in the pass. I can`t see any oil.


I´m removing everything in the front, I only had a extinguisher with powder. It`s very aggressiv, messy and causes rust so I´ve got to take the car apart.

As a separate "funny now" note, I recall being 19yrs old driving my Series 1 RS turbo quite hard as you do at that age back in the 90's and the engine oil light came on, baring in mind that it was burning oil as it was pushing an unmapped 200bhp from what was the standard 132bhp I think the car was a ticking time bomb, so I stopped immediately after the light came on. I proceeded to pour oil in the rocker cap filler and slugged it over the turbo and headers ! Eek ...:( it ignited immediately but luckily it wasn't a great deal and I managed to extinguish it!

However what I did learn, amongst many other things, is that serious exhaust heat and a small splash of oil don't mix at all, seems obvious I know, but the slightest rocker leak on a subaru generally leads straight onto the headers, I've had this also and I crapped myself! This incident was after an engine build by a reputable "was" subaru garage, luckily I was bedding in the engine so keeping the revs under 2500 when it happened, thus no excessive heat for it to ignite..... Scary all the same!

Close call there, glad to hear you managed to extinguish it pretty swiftly!

I had something similar happen to me 6-8 weeks ago, before I got around to buying an extinguisher :o

PAS fluid leaked and soaked the heat wrap on my headers and it went up in smoke. I was fortunate that a little girl came running out of her house with a bucket of water.

The fire was in a similar location to yours, front left corner under the PAS reservoir. I've replaced all the timing gear, RAD, Fans, all under bonnet hoses, all auxiliary belts, oil modine coolant pipework, PAS Pump and pipework etc... also discovered that the bearings in the alternator are starting to seize so replaced that as well.

I intend to finish the work on the car this weekend and get it back on the road.

Exactly the same as what happened to me Harry, hence now I have no heat wrap anywhere, 2 extinguishers and braided PAS lines from the rack etc.

Cheers guys good to hear that with the wrapping, so off it will be with the wrapping.
