My 65,000 mile Bugeye WRX is due a cambelt change, would you replace the oil pump?

Hello all,

I will do a proper introduction in the members bit as i've returned to Impreza ownership recently and it would be rude not to!

I've just purchased a 1 owner, 65,000 mile WRX. It has had the servicing done as required but no more than this, and has no modifications.

Its due a cambelt and I've purchased a gates kit with a waterpump for my mechanic to fit.

Having done some reading there is some really mixed views on whether or not to replace the oil pump. Some say if ain't broke....some say the screws come loose and all sorts of horror stories.

I won't be tracking it or driving within an inch of its life if that affects the decision.

Its not a money thing particularly, although saving £150 is never going to go amiss its also the fact that i don't want to start disturbing things that on the surface are not faulty.

I'm going on a european road trip next year and am aiming to take the Impreza so just trying to iron out any flaws.

Thanks for any advice!

Replace it for piece of mind imo

make sure whoever is doing the job is competent enough to do it and experienced
Last thing you want is an airlock then fried headgaskets always make sure your technician knows what he's doing you won't have nothing to worry about

thanks, I forgot to add are there any recommendations when replacing the pump? I can't seem to find an OE 10mm pump most are 11mm.

Are there any seals that need replacing as a must / good practise.

Get in contact with alyn at as performance top advice price for genuine and good quality parts and all info you will need or try import car parts just as good imo and you'll be all good to go

Unless you want to give rcm a ring but they are alittle pricey

I replace the oil pump on my bugeye STi when I did the cambelt change. I got mine from Roger Clarke Motorsport. I takes about 20 minutes more to do the oil pump so worth doing. I vacuumed the cooling system down prior to filling it. This was with a properly designed kit that then used the vacuum to pull the coolant in, thus no airlocks!!

Thanks for the replies chaps, I went ahead and ordered a standard oe 10mm one with new seals etc as most people on here seemed to think 11 or 12 is overkill and the RCM modified one looked good but it's just a daily runner so again just plumped for the standard one.

I'm assuming my mechanic (he isnt just a "mate") will be aware of the bleeding / priming process or whatever it is that people mention? Its not a subaru specific thing?

Thanks again for the advice
