Do I have ringland
Ok so I've not been active for a while on here but I'm unsure what to believe as I'm being told I've got ringland failure and before I sell my car for peanuts I thought I'd post here and get some sound advice.
The car is currently with Paul at extreme Scoobies in essex.. symptoms are as follows starts on the button and runs smooth no smoke from filler nor exhaust no eml drives perfect under normal driving misfire on hard acceleration compression test shows cylinders range 132 145 150 150 unsure if it's using any oil as I'm not using it enough the car is a 57 reg sti hatchback with 82k any a dive would be much appreciated atm |
It's also worth noting it has a real bad flat spot in the middle of the rev range on boost which has been there before the misfire problem. I'd always assumed that it was maf or boost sensor/solenoid related so never got round to looking into it..

why would you think Paul would lie ?
|
I never said he was lying! I was diagnosed with neumonia last week but guess what when I first went to my gp she said it was just a cough. Ive got no reason to doubt Paul but without opening the engine you can't be 100% right?
just after some opinions from people's own experiences before I potentially lose thousands. |
Just a thought but I would imagine that ringland failure would scratch the bore? You can buy usb bore scopes for less than 10 quid off eBay or Amazon.
I would scope the bores with lower compression as a starter for 10. |

But back to op, does look like theres an issue on 2 of the cylinders :( (one more so than ther other) Could be valves, could be ring land, what ever it is will be an expensive fix. |
How's tin going chris it's matt ?. Me and Gav are popping down a car show this Sunday if you fancy it ?. Sorry to hear about the motor mate.
|
Speak to neil @ slowboy aswell chris for a second opinion. He's a good lad and very knowledgeable
|
Cheers Matt I'm seeing gav on Friday so I'll be sure to mention it
|
That's slowboy racing @ brands hatch mate. Not sure if Gav still has his trailer so he could get your car over there if he does

Ringland failure on the EJ257 engine's normally occur on No.4 cylinder and occasionally on No.2 cylinder.
Does this tie in with the compression test results ? Mick |
Hi Mick
I've also heard this but in my case cylinder 4 is good. I don't know if it's of any significance but the car sat for almost 2 months without being started and it was empty of fuel and had a flat battery it's a long story but like I said I don't know if it has any significance to the running problems |
It's obviously had fresh fuel and a brand new battery fitted since then, but the misfire occurred immediately afterwards
|
Bore scope seems a good idea for a tenner.
Do you have a misfire code come up? Does it match with the cylinder lower on compression? I don't have a newage car, but I had a feeling they were quite good at triggering a misfire code, so is it worth driving it more to see if codes come up and they match the compression test results? Could be ignition (spark plugs or coils) if it happens under high boost or in the mid-range which tends to be a bit lean, both conditions where you need a good quality spark. |
fuel filter blockage due to running very low and picking up crap ??
