Phoning a USA mobile

I am trying to get in touch with an old USA pal who only has mobile and the number is 571 212 ****

I want to phone her from my BT Landline but need to know codes I need in front of the number.

I phoned BT who hadn't a clue and finally told me to put 0044 in front of the number but that is complete bollox.

So can anyone help?

David

have you search any of the social media sites for the friend ?
Have you tried Whats app on the chance they also have it installed on their phone ?

my ole man , who lives N.C. has an ancient ,he says, mobile which i have left texts on

he was so surprised cos nobody ever calls him on it , and he maintained internet was so slow it wasn't worth bothering / he couldn't manage the tech

Suddenly he's all over facebook.

and I'm not playing

OK thanks guys. Friend is a lady in her 70s so not especially switched on to technology so a call to her mobile is best. I have a Friends & Family Int deal with BT and cost to USA is 1 pence per minute (so they tell me??) although I don't want my friend to be hit by high roaming costs. I can also use this deal to phone my son in Dublin where he is based or other parts of the world as he travels a bit.

Skype is the obvious answer but it seem a bit much for her to set up.

Cheers David

you can install skype and pay voip charges to call a mobile / landline.

There are other service providers, but skype is the simplest

Vyke is slightly cheaper

what are voip charges?

I keep telling her to get skype sorted and will give her daughter a ring to tell her to help her mum set it up.

It's the cost for you to use an internet based phone (be it skype, Vype or whatever) to dial a physical phone line (be it mobile or land) in the usa.

If she has a smart phone, WhatsApp is a much simpler solution than skype IMHO

David Lock 07 June 2017 02:23 PM

OK thanks for that - learn something every day (even at my age!!).

I'll try and find out what sort of phone Barbara has. I do find Skype useful for sending text messages as I can use a full key board and not flaff about trying to use my mobile to text on a postage stamp size keyboard. Skype has a limit on number of words but quite generous. Also I can run a spellcheck and even copy and paste into the message.

No idea about WhatsApp so will investigate.

Technology :cuckoo:

Google hangouts works on WiFi you can voice call or video call.

Viber seemed good as well ( another app on phone), all requiring data though so this could be stumbling block

Sign up to 18185 and you can call any US mobile or landline any time of day for next to nothing (no charge on your main phone bill if you have unlimited local calls included in your package).

There is no reason to pay for any international calls any more. If you've access to WiFi, which to be honest is available everywhere. Either use apples facetime or Google hangouts. I video phoned my family whilst in a diner in the USA back to the UK for nothing 20 min chat. I even used my VPN so the free WiFi couldn't snoop.

My daughter whilst backpacking around Australia would call on hangouts back to the UK from WiFi points

im pretty sure there are still a number of spots world wide without wifi

god forbid
