Sink/Plumbing
I need to exploit the fathomless DIY knowledge of SN again. :lol1:
My kitchen sink doesn't smell too good. I was looking at the plumbing and I notice the trap? thingy has two drain connections? left open? Should these be plugged if not in use? Any other reason the sink would smell? https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...95f40005d6.jpg |
Yes should be blocked off....first one I've seen with so many
Also clean that flux off the pipe work pal....a few years and it will eat through the copper :thumb: |

Block that off it will stink / could leak, also you might find the bottom half will unscrew to let you into it for cleaning out.

Can the trap thing itself be opened to clean it out?
The other inlets should be blocked though |
1
1 is washing machine
2 is dishwasher 3 is ment for waste disposal block it off if not used :thumb: |
The spare outlets should be capped, the smell / gassy odours will be coming back up the waste pipe and exiting through these open outlets
Close these off and the smell shouldn't be able to get back through the bottle trap (albeit it's mounted on it's side a bit rather that vertical) this wee write up should help you http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects...etrapswork.htm |

while its in bits remove the sink drain part, a lot have a ridge and food builds up there, like a grease ring, also the trap to sink drain part just seem push fit, two different types pushed together ?

Aren't the outlets above the 'trap'?
the waste goes down into the bottle trap, liquid rises and goes down the waste pipe So if the outlets were capped, the waste outlet's fumes can't escape / return up to the sink as the pipe between the sink into the bottle trap is sealed with the water in the trap (check out the trap pictures in the link) |
Personally I'd rip that out and fit a new basket strainer with a combi trap and pushfit waste instead of that flexi. I rarely use the kit that comes with the sinks now a days.
|
Is that one at 10 o'clock really open? Unless you've given it a good clean or the photo is changing the angle, that doesn't look like it could be open without chucking out liquid regularly.
|
Looking at the trap, fitted at an angle, I wonder if that has led to the water level inside the trap falling below that which will seal it?
It's poor work, whoever fitted it. |
Washer and dishwasher waste hoses should go up before they come down to stop the waste water from the sink running back into the washer
