Possible turbo failure

Hi All,

Was driving uphill just now and put my foot down in second gear. Next thing I hear a loud hiss (think blow off dump valve) and almost complete loss of power with black smoke out of the exhaust.

Does that sound like a complete turbo failure or something else?

Car is a 2000 UK Turbo - no mods except exhaust upgrade

If it is turbo does anyone have any idea of repair costs?

It'll be a shame if it is terminal as just had new clutch fitted about 100 miles ago :luxhello:

Check all the pipes, maybe an intercooler pipe had blown off,if you recently had the clutch done then maybe one of the pipes hasn't been tightened fully?

If it does turn out to be Turbo - I have a TD04 in my garage, v good condition with approx 80k on it. Give me a shout if you need it

Now would be a good time to upgrade the turbo .. check oil level as well

sound like a hose has popped off as those are also symptoms of it running rich and the black reek. If a hose has popped off it usually runs like a bag of nails and might even cut out or be erratic on tick over.

Thanks everyone - I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can see anything. Will let you know either way :)

Guys thanks for the help on this, it turned out to be the intercooler hose that's blown off. I can't get it back on though so going to take it down to he garage and ask why it wasn't tightened up properly when they did the clutch.

Yeah, as per sti-chris, I meant to post up saying it sounded very much like a hose of the boost system had blown off (never got round to it, sorry). I experienced it loads on my first turbo car back in the day, a R5 turbo.

I'm glad it was that - you can now breathe a sigh of relief.

Great news bud :thumb: Glad it's a simple fix

Yes they can be a PITA to get back on!

Yeah it's a fair bit cheaper than a new turbo :)
