Petrol power for me.

jaygsi 19 May 2017 10:13 PM

My mate has one, she has to keep using her land rover as it can't go far enough with battery, she can never do spur of the moment, has to plan out every trip. Rubbish

London and all cities and towns have to do this

London's ULEZ (ultra low emissions zone) is a constant failure at meeting emissions lowering targets.

Why? They are taxing on something that isn't tested.

You can quite easily have a EuroV petrol or diesel that's not operating correctly and happily tootle round inner London on a lower tax rate and nobody would be any the wiser as more often than not these vehicles will still fly through the current and vastly outdated emission tests, despite them polluting much more than their original design criteria.

For ULEZs to work, vehicles need to have stricter emissions tests. Otherwise in ten years time we'll have hybrids with dead battery packs driving round purely on petrol power, and nothing will stop them (hybrids don't even have a emissions test on the combustion engine :cuckoo: ).

Nobody in the powers-that-be has learnt a thing from the VAG emissions cheating; The only way to stop a polluting vehicle, regardless of type is by having stricter annual emissions tests. The current emissions tests are a waste of time for anything newer than Euro III and this is why pollution is getting worse as nothing is preventing these vehicles from being used.

(apart from the AdBlue shut down which some manufacturers employ...easily bypassed with a box from eBay  ).

Nissan leaf supposedly 155mile range, lets say 100miles for real world driving. That is a 50mile commute each way. If she is not charging every night, then that is her stupid fault.

I did 3 trips yesterday all less than 30 miles each, I plugged in each time I stopped so was fully recharged for each journey. I average not less than 105mpg, most 150mpg as I didnt use any petrol at all. The engine ran for maybe 10 mins in total. This is an XC90 with nearly 400bhp, weighing over 2 tonnes and a tiny battery in comparison to the Leaf.

If your friend cant get organised

Yes either regular emissions test or road side scanning, which is possible, so a vehicle can be scanned as a drive by, logged and charged direct to the owner.

The Whole point is make you plan journey / don't use car as much - thus save the planet

( and the asthmatic young ones)

how do you calculate the mpg ?

dpb 20 May 2017 09:08 AM

Good on yer , but the real benefit would come from banning polluting diesel public transport and then cars from city centres outward

Rural Lincolnshire ???

The car does it, It registers 150 mpg when using battery only and stay there, when the engine kicks in the average mpg begins to falls. In reality when using battery alone, I pay for electricity to charge.

Car actually takes about 4 hours to charge up fully with a 3KW charger, so actual cost are £1.44 per battery journey, that is only £1.44(peak cost for electric, off peak will be less than half, 72p!. Zero emissions at source. :D

I know those who will say your creating emissions at the power station. Well I'm getting solar so will offset the charging emissions.

Yes, rural Lincs, soon to be rural Rutland, a little nearer to what we need so full electric will do a run all week. I will trade all cars to electric in the family.

Just make the MOT test stricter. Most cars with obvious running problems currently pass with flying colours.

Except Imprezas it seems, if you ever venture out of NSR :o Even my 34yr old Jag can beat the CO levels that some Impreza owners are struggling with. :lol1:

Of course you do :lol1:

Gets charged every night. And the car pays for itself with no use of fuel.

But its still crap, if you have no interest in cars and just want a simple a to b car then go for it.

Her husband don't like it, driven the land rover its a beast.

No fan of 'green' nonsense. Be it electric, runs on rainbows,is hybrid/half breed. Whatever. And no,sticking a badge on the car saying 'eco'or 'green' gets right up my nose.

Lets revel in real motoring until we have no choice but accept it. i.e we run out of real fuel

Christ I hate electric and hybrid stuff. Happy to pay extra for a noisy fuel guzzler:D

Diesel smells nothing like 'fags' Jack. I quite like the smell!

Fossil fuel powered cars will probably be marginalised long before that happens.

Was told in school in the 1970's aged about 7 that we had about 10 years of fossil fuel left.lol:D

pollution control will put pay to internal combustion engines before fuel runs out.

dpb 20 May 2017 09:41 PM

We'll just have swallow our pride and pay big time to eu and Russia for our leccy to run our cars

Reinvest in clean methods to burn coal, refine better mining techniques and postpone the demolishion of further fossil fuel stations so they can be converted to burn it.

Home industry, resolves future power shortages created by increased EV dependence, creates "Hands on" jobs on all levels, not just office jobs.

Nah, that sounds like far too much hard work to implement, let's get the Chinese to build us some nuke stations and import our fuel. Then put huge "pollution" taxes on diesels to cover the shortfall ;)

neil-h 21 May 2017 11:10 AM

Well I can confidently say I've only heard one other person advocating a return to coal power (in recent times) and that's a certain Mr Trump. Couldn't think why.

ALi-B 21 May 2017 01:32 PM

I don't think trump was being facetious though ;)

neil-h 21 May 2017 03:12 PM

I don't think Trump knows what facetious means :lol1:

Iv a feeling our EV enthusiasts are believing we'll all have a solar strapped to the roof soon thatll pay for it all , not realising Elton Mask hails from somewhere with quite a lot more sunshine

It's rare.

At the end of the day diesel cars give out to much pollution, i'm surprised there still about, leaded petrol was removed due to the lead being harmful, diesel emissions are not good at all, alot worse than petrol.

I've never owned one and don't plan too, when i got together with my misses the first thing was to go was her diesel car :thumb:
