Coilovers for a classic???
 

Hi I'm looking for some decent coilers for my 97 classic wagon but also not break my bank account. Can any one push us in the right direction of what brands etc to look for in the subaru world.

I have eibach pro street s on my e36 and they are perfect, stiff but comfortable and handles well.

bc br coil overs ive had mine on for 12 months and they are good bits of kit worth the wedge. and for price u get quite a lot to compared with other brands. fully adjustable great for track day and general sh676 road use.

I had BC on my 96 STI and they were great value for money, far better than I expected couldn't fault them. Infact if I bought another Scooby I'd fit them again and wouldn't bother with anything more expensive as I'v driven on KW and Cuscos which didn't seem any better.

What struts and springs you running? I've currently got the standard setup for a uk2000 but believe one strut is knackered. I've got the sti set up in my garage to replace it this weekend. But was looking for a better upgrade then that.

That car is on Eibach-made wr15r/t springs and kyb agx struts.

You could get the same stance with kyb excel-g struts (£250 new set, on ebay), same as non-inverted sti struts + Eibach-made P11L springs.

What sti suspension have you got? Inverted (v5sti & v6sti) - 39mm dia damper rod, or non-inverted struts - 22mm dia damper rod.

BC on the 4/3 springs have been recommended to me as a good road usage package.


I'll be purchasing in the next month or so.

WR15R/T are 4/3.5 (230lb/in/200lb/in) as per the rates of the v6sti
P11L are 3.5/3 (194lb/in/157lb/in) as per the rates of the Prodrive Impreza P1

YOU WHAT. You've driven on kw and not any better? Either you have a difficulty in comparing or that's just nonsense.
Cusco can be a bit firm so I can relate.
BC well most say they are crap and I agree, too firm and rocky for a daily, miester r will beat them hands down.

I've got no idea. They came with my last classic but the rot was so bad. So broke it.

They are inverted struts.

The part numbers are stamped into the metal tube above the lower mounting brackets.
One of the rears appears to have the label, still stuck on the lower mounting bracket. If complete, this should also have the part number on it.

v5sti, v6sti and P1 inverted struts are still available new, between £750-£1000 per set - 20311FA950 20311FA960 20360FA950 20360FA960

I see. The code I found on one of these is 20311FA910, don't know if that means anything. Had a look online only reference I could find was for a gc8.

Those are the previous part numbers to the ones I posted. Your set will be 20311fa900 20311fa910 20360fa900 20360fa910
So, probably off a v5sti.
The front bump stop is too stiff for British roads. (originally a form of pitch control for smooth Japanese roads). The rear stop is too soft.

Prodrive used those inverted struts, but with softer spring rates, tailored to British b-roads.
You can change the internal bump stops to a softer more progressive front and a stiffer shorter rear. Prodrive later offered different front stops.
If you want the softer P1 type springs = P11L
If you want a lower version of the v5sti/v6sti springs = WR15R/T

If your struts are in good condition (deteriorate after 60k), the ride heights will be 6mm higher than in the above pics. As they have a higher static gas pressure, when new.

thats really helpful thanks. i would like the ride height slightly lower then it was on the previous. Something definitely with considering rather than coil overs.

Just out of interest what spring rates were you using?


Lads on the irish forum have recommended using the 4/3 springs over the std 5/4 rates
