Engine rebuild - who to go to?!

Recently got rod knocking on my 2010 Impreza WRX STI 2.5 hatchback.

Going to have to get the engine rebuilt. But with forged pistons, uprated rods, arp headstuds etc for extra security. Don't want to go mad with the horsies.

Was wondering where everyone recommends as I've had mixed answers.

Cheers, Tom

Previous owner of my car had a forged build done by Finch motorsport a few years ago. Never had any issues so far and its done well over 30k miles since the build with little to no oil use between services.

Richard Henry motorsport in Bradford have built my engine in my sprint car, it's been subject to some serious abuse on my part and it's sweet as a nut.
Give them a call tel:01274 732508.
Speak to owner Andy Hill, quality workmanship and fantastic to deal with
They are only an hour up the road from you.

Cheers!

What sort of prices am I looking at?

Depends on spec and goals. Best bet find a place your happy with and discuss spec and cost direct with them. Just beware of cheap jobs, you get what you pay for and i've seen some abismal engine builds.

Don't really want to go mad on spec. Just want to future proof it to be honest.

I've been quoted 5 grand so far 😔

about the right sort of money for a basic rebuild, issue is going to be how much damage there is when its stripped. The bill can go up alot if you find parts are knackered. I ended up with a big bill because most (only the head castings were reusable) of the engine was damaged when they stripped it.

Chevron Motorsport in Stafford did mine a couple of years ago.
15,000 miles and it sounds exactly as it did from day 1 of the build, set me back about 4k.
Speak to Simon and he will go through everything with you, i was recommended by Bob Rawle who said "i wouldnt have anyone else build my engine" :notworthy

Just to add, Simon will leave no stone unturned, hes not the cheapest but in my experience he will build you a good engine :thumb:

If you want your 2.5 built personally i would got Steve Whitson of SW Motorsport based in Edinburgh yes a bit far to travel but he is one of the best builders about .

Three years ago Paul Finch built mine, its does half a dozen track days a year and few run what you brungs. Doesn't use any oil and still pulls like a train. Customer service is second to none, prices are fair too.

Im sure there is good and bad in all engine builds and i hadn't got a clue which way to turn when i needed mine.
I think the key here is to do plenty of research, go speak to a few builders and see how they operate.
When i chose Chevron Simon definitely knew his stuff, he put me at ease and gave me the confidence to go ahead with the build.
I had also heard that he worked with Mclaren in his younger days and still does the testing on the Whiteline Impreza's.

That was it for me i was sold :)

Mate, did you buy Mario's Type R? :)

300gnspitzer 25 April 2017 09:25 PM

WMS gets my vote, did a top job for me, very good price too.

What engine was that on. Obviously mine is the 2.5 EJ25 so I'm guessing it will be more pricey?!

He supplied 2.o odb new 2.5 crank, rods and pistons, oil pump, gaskets, seals etc and fitted my cylinder heads and timing belt. after refitting and mapping with vf35 turbo made 340 bhp and 350 ft lbs torque. Its only used on track and so far running perfectly. I'm very happy.
